My opinion is that this car is meant to be experienced as a fun lightweight drivers car with old school sensibilities.
I think it's designed to be enjoyed as a no frills manual rear wheel drive. But if you don't enjoy or can't drive a manual transmission there is always the automatic there for you. |

I test drive 2 AT FR-S. One was a coworker's and the other was the FR-S test drive/auto cross thing they had in summer of 2012. Both were very enjoyable. I love my MT as well. So, if an AT fits your needs, rock on. I have all highway driving with very little traffic and I enjoy heel toe shifting, so MT works for me.

I'll admit, sometimes I miss my old long-throw transmission. There is something fun about rowing a transmission from high off of the floor.

I liked the automatic very much and if the final drive was as short as the manual it would have been a very tough choice. I love rowing my own gears but the auto can be convenient when you are feeling lazy. Also I like flappy paddle shifters too. In the end it's what you like best, test drive them both like I did.

I feel like the A/T would be better if they had the same gear ratios as the M/T for 1-6, and then add a 7th gear with the A/T 6th gear ratio or longer for highway cruising

I cant tell if the anti-auto trolls are being serious or not, but this thread has been a fun read.

I have an A/T because I knew I'd be driving it in traffic more than out of traffic. Flappy Paddles are more than good enough for me if I want to be in control during a back road drive. |

I prefer the manual transmission. I like the feeling. It just feels natural for me to reach for the shifter instead of using the paddle shifter. I really tried with video games and our FR-S's in the lot. I just can't get used to the auto, so manual for me. Just as enjoyable in long drives and in the (tiny) highway (we have) as well.
In the end, it's a matter of personal preference. We can tell you our views, opinions and experience all day long, but that's us, not you. You might as well think about your driving style/habits and decide which type of transmission fits you. |

Apparently there are readily available code emulator apps for smart phones or stand alone devices that will crack some systems allowing the perps to easily open and start the cars. |
