I've driven both, and although I prefer the manual, the automatic is the most responsive and fun to drive automatic I have ever seen. If I could have two of these cars, one of them would be an auto.

The gearing is pretty awful. My old tC had a better feel while driving.

As for auto v manual, stick is so old school. If the auto was better, I would have purchased that

Can't go wrong with either. I'm perfectly happy with my auto after 40K+ miles.

Manual for sure, it's just so much more engaging. When you buy a proper sports car you want a proper gearbox. It's so satisfying when you get your shifts right. Get a manual.

I went auto. Left in regular drive mode its smooth and quiet. Power mode holds gears and is highly entertaining. You can trigger a manual gear change via the paddle shifters and after a few seconds it goes back to doing its own thing.

So if you want a quick burst of speed just plant the foot and drop back a gear.

Also like how the paddle's are positioned so close to the wheel so I just move my index finger forward an inch or so and pull for a gear change. I believe if you are fast enough with a double tap it will drop 2 gears in one go.

The moment you pull either paddle and go into manual mode an indicator near the digital speedo appears showing the gear you're in and an arrow up and down to indicate if its safe to go up or down a gear. I believe it will refuse a gear change if it thinks it to be a bad idea too.

The gear changes are insanely smooth and fast too.

Be warned the fuel economy goes out the window if you use power mode often (like I do). See my sig's fuel profile. Mostly city driving, short trips and long warm ups. Pretty sure that's the worst it can get, but I'm trying for worse. The auto is that much fun for me

If you're used to driving manual and like it, then buy a manual FR-S. You will get bored of auto after a few months. Happened to me when I bought my GTI with a dual-clutch auto, and I know of a few other people who had a similar experience.

But if you're used to driving auto, then you'd be fine going either way. If you want a bit of a challenge, buy the manual. If you want more of the same, get the auto.

I got the A/T since there is more than just me driving it. If that's the compromise I have to make to have a lightweight, RWD, fun car, then so be it. SHE loves driving it too, which helped justify the cost of ownership.

Go buy a 911 GT3 with a manual, or a 911 Turbo, or any Lambo, or maybe an AMG car? Ferrari you say?

This is a tired argument. None of the above "proper" sports cars can be had with a manual transmission.

I have the auto and love it. Both on the street and on the rack. 1st mod I did was re-gear it from 4.10s to 4.88s, which is also the best mod I have done to the car.
Yes, if I was buying another FRS it would be the automatic.

I love my automatic. For daily driving with traffic it works great, and on the weekends I get to beat stick shift twins in autocross.
