I wrapped my turbo lines and various other hoses and lines with this stuff. It works great. Not cheap though.

Why would oil temps rise so high while idling or going slow in traffic?
Seems to me the engine's not making much heat/no load, I would think the oil temps would level off at some lower temp. Do the temps rise that high on stock cars in traffic? Quote:

The car needs to be in motion to take advantage of the cool air rushing in through the grills and openings while in motion or at speed. When at idle the cars engine bay is like an oven baking a two liter because no cool air is coming through passing over the internals and assisting cooling mods with cooling

I just think with the car just idling in traffic that the oil temps would level off, and not be as high as 255. The radiator fans would be on, cooling the radiator (mine stays at 200 under load or not) and with no load, the oil wouldn't heat up so much.
Do stock, unmodified cars run oil temps as high as 255 in traffic? Quote:

I have the aftermarket Koyo radiator for my FRS. Coolant temps for me hardly ever go over 192.2 F (if the fans are on keeping the coolant temps cool then I don't notice them), but the oil temps will definitely rise regardless. If I see the oil temps climbing past around 250 F then I'll turn on the heater, which will eventually get the oil temps to drop. I'm not stock though, I have the Innovate SC kit w/ intercooler and PPE headers. I should have elaborated on the driving condition instead of just saying, "stuck in LA traffic." Here's the scenario: I'm driving down to LA on the freeway cruising with the flow between 60 -75 mph, and then I quickly come up on a wall of traffic and I have to come to a complete stop or almost a complete stop. The car is stopped or slowly crawling for almost a minute before it picks up again, but the car hardly reaches speeds over 35 mph before having to stop or crawl again. This will continue for another 15-30 minutes depending on how bad traffic is. As already mentioned by others, not a lot of airflow passing thru the radiators to cool them down. If the radiator fans are being switched on automatically then I don't notice them. I don't hear them spinning, I don't feel the engine surging at all and I don't see the rpms dip either- like when I normally have the heater on. Turning the heater on will help the oil temps drop down back to normal. Lucky for me I don't mind a little heat. As for my passengers, I just explain to them that it's necessary because I'm FI and they're cool with it.

The exhaust manifold is beneath the engine, so even idling this engine is going to heat the oil more than other cars that don't use boxer engines...

If the cooler is mounted in front of the radiator/AC condenser, then anytime the fans kick in to cool down the coolant or AC condenser, it also pulls air through the oil cooler. We never, ever, see temps over 220 street driving with the JRSC + JROC. Regulation of ECT also results in regulation of EOT as a byproduct. |

And in my eyes mounting it in front of the rad, condenser, and intercooler just doesn't seem wise.

The FMIC is the system that will not cause any real damage if it gets hit by a rock or something. You'll have a boost leak, but the MAF will also read less air, so you just make less power until you replace/repair the FMIC. You won't lose an engine. |

I see some pretty crazy JDM stuff from Japan, up-turned muffler tips, huge wings on drift cars, and also externally mounted oil coolers with exposed cooler lines like in this pic.
https://www.google.com/search?q=jdm+...2F%3B631%3B420 I was thinking of mounting my cooler like this, but covering it with my license plate. This would keep it protected, and when needed for track use I'd just remove the license plate for the needed cooling. All the other times (street) the plate would cover it and no one would know, except for the cooler lines, which might look kind of JDM cool, drifty style. |

The ptuning guys that track use an even larger intercooler and oil cooler, and haven't had any issues either. The first step is to add more powerful fans, but the vendors on this board love to push radiators instead (which, IMO, is not the first cooling mod that should be done). |

I agree, I think the shroud is more important than a bigger radiator.
My problem is not enough space to mount my oil cooler. I'm going to explore cutting the opening in the front plastic splitter and mounting my oil cooler flat, or installing behind the passenger fog light. Quote:
