AVH-4000NEX or AppRadio 4?
Looking to replace the stock HU on my BRZ with something that is CarPlay ready. I thing I've narrowed it down to 2 Pioneer units the AVH-4000NEX and the AppRadio 4 SPH-DA120. I haven't played a disk in years so the 4000's DVD slot isn't really that important. I mostly play podcasts or stream Spotify. I'd like to add a backup camera to the system at some point too. I will be using the stock amp and speakers for now.
I priced out the 4000 at a local audio shop and they have the HU on sale for $599 and want $912 installed out the door including tax. The install seem a little steep to me. I can get the AppRadio on Amazon for $499. I'm willing to try the install myself assuming I can find a good guide to all the additional stuff I'll need (dash kit, adapters, etc.). Does anyone have any opinions on these two units? I'm open to other options but CarPlay is a priority. TIA for any help. |

I was looking at these two units as well. I went with the 4000nex for the bigger screen and built-in HD radio. PM me, if you decide to install it yourself. I'm planning to install it myself.

Thanks Jake. Unfortunately I'm in ATL. Appreciate the offer though.
Scooby, the 4000 is only $30 more than the DA120. I like the bigger screen but the 120's screen is capacitive vs resistive on the 4000. I will say the screen on the 4000 worked pretty well in the audio shop display. I'm on the fence. I shouldn't have much trouble with the install itself. It's just getting all the bits and pieces together. Thx for the input. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

You won't need help. The install is a cake walk.
Is the shop really charging you THREE HUNDRED DOLLARS for install? If you buy through Crutchfield they'll give you the install kit, wiring harness, antenna adapter, and provide the instructions to do it. All for free. |

Honestly, I'd wait until Pioneer finished updating their lineup. Even if you don't need an optical drive, having navi built-in is nice and will save your data.
I HATE the App Radios with a passion. Does it have to be a Pioneer? This is EXACTLY what you're looking for. http://www.alpine-usa.com/product/view/carplay-ilx-007 |

I was on the same boat as the OP and choose 4000 NEX due to larger screen, better bluetooth, more supports due to it is being in the NEX lineup, and also more future proved. Capacitive screen IMO is actually easier to see when the sunlight hitting directly on the screen.

It appears that the CarPlay-enabled Pioneer AVH-4000NEX can go beyond SDHC & 32GB. It was tested to handle a 256GB PNY SDXC formatted in NTFS ($96). I wonder if this holds true to USB flash drives north of 32GB like the 256GB PNY USB 3 flash drive ($70).

I also chose the 4000NEX. Got it for $519 on Amazon through a third-party vendor. Ordered last Tuesday, got it on Wednesday! (this vendor was also in Atlanta, it turns out)
I have not installed it yet, as I am awaiting the wiring harness, dash kit, etc from Sonic. But I have hooked it up to a spare PSU in my home office so I could check it out and perform the Carplay firmware update. Love it. Yes, it has a resistive touchscreen, but it is WAY better than the touchscreen on the OEM BRZ HU. Really not missing the capacitive touch here. The biggest factors that swayed me were the larger screen, the HD Radio, and the SD card slot. I have tested a 64GB NTFS SD Card (Samsung EVO Pro), and it read from it and played quickly (I tested video and music files). I don't play CDs often in my car lately, but it's a nice-to-have. Can even play DVDs. And the tilt screen might help with glare. I plan to do the install myself, and have no aftermarket stereo installation experience. Hopefully, I can figure it out with the threads here and elsewhere. I did install a Rydeen Duo backup cam in my car, so will have to rewire that and find an alternate power source. I may ping you guys here with questions if I run into any trouble. -Z |

The install is a cake walk. Just match up the colors on the radio's harness and the installation harness you ordered. Easy peasy.
