AppRadio 3 Install

kept looking around for a head unit install but couldn't find anything, follow along if you wish for my install, will most likely take course over 2 weeks....however if another install is posted, please let me know too

To start, basiccally just prep work before i mess with the wires, just a quick play around as it's raining outside and dont really have too much time to play with today

1) I removed the stereo trim panels:

Lining up the bracket, turns out it only fits upside down....

Just curious about the fit...currently driving without that trim piece lol

Installed the front spacers and wires....

its not necessary to remove the long dash piece. Just the radio piece itself pops out really easy. That dash install kit is crap. You will have to modify it to work in conjunction with the stock brackets. I took some dykes and cut out some of the plastic to fit around the metal bracket. Also another thing I had to do was make the holes that the screws go into on the appradio bigger. The stock screws wont screw into them. I used a self tappin screw to open up the holes then the stock screws went right in. I don't understand why you have to modify a "stock" replacement part like that but you do. haha

i ripped out that long piece just to see what was behind it haha, may actually run a few wires to the glove box that way since its a lot more open, still havnt had time to fully play around, hoping to have this thing wired up tomorrow

The funniest thing i find about the FR-S is that every time i look at another part, its always stamped with Subaru

that's pretty much what its built for. My android options and apps suck compared to my buddies iphone options and apps. Its a pretty cool unit but is frustrating sometimes.

You should only have to ground it to bypass the hand brake. I wouldn't think you'd need an extra part

Ordered mine two days ago. Sould be here tomorrow. Do you think it would be possible to connect the app radio to an USB input that is there now? I know there is a DIY for that but i didn't know if the app radio would be different

You are right. You do have to ground it but it needs to be grounded after the radio comes on. All he needs is a relay. Same style relay that comes in lighting wiring harnesses and stuff like that. $5 at AutoZone. Power goes to the head unit, turns the head unit on first then switches the relay to a ground. It won't work otherwise

I thought about that also but I'm not so sure its gonna work that way. I needed a 30 pin cable to connect to the back of the radio and then my iPod. I used just the USB port on the radio and plugged in my iPod and it brought up the play list but wouldn't produce any sound. I then took a head phone jack cable and plugged it in to the headunit and my iPod along with the USB cable and that worked. Displayed the iPod on the screen and produced sound but had a strange pulsing static sound to it. So after talking to my buddy who works in car stereo, he told me I need that 30 pin cable. It should come in the iPod connection cable pack that you can buy with the radio. Since I have an android, I bought the cable kit for it but also needed the iPod cable.

So to answer your question further ..... It doesnt appear that an iPod will work without either a USB + head phone jack plugged into it or that 30 pin cable so even if you hooked up that stock USB port then it would only display info but play no sound. What I did think about doin, which I think I'm gonna try, is just powering that stock USB port so that it can serve as a charger. I have a car charger for my phone but it takes up a lot of space in the center console so if I could just plug in a cable to that USB port and charge my phone then that would be very useful for me

While I don't advocate watching videos while driving in the driver position Pioneer radios have never required additional parts to bypass the parking brake function.

Simply ground the slot next to the mute wire (yellow/black). You can move the mute wire over or just insert a wire into the empty slot and make sure its tight and won't work itself loose over time...bypass done. No additional money squandered on relays and switches.

Finished product
