I think you guys have reassured the reliability of the FRS and have given me a good idea on what to do next. I think I need to get to test driving everything and see what I think in the end. I think I can deal with the lower functionality of the FRS while getting a great driving experience. Im going to test out everything and see how it goes. Ill have to find out for myself if the fun is really worth a loss in function. Thank you all for your input! I might see you guys in the future!

also, what "functionality" do you feel you give up with the frs vs gti/genesis?

Good Point, I know that car dealerships try to make it an emotional experience which can lead to you getting a bad deal or something that you really didnt want just because of their trickery. But Emotionally, the FRS is my choice and then the Gen. I just wanted some reassurance or ideas on my other logical ideas. Obviously I also have the pressure of the parents here. Even though Im paying for the car, they want me to get something that makes more sense. Dad tried to convince me to go with the Prius instead. Though it makes sense from their POV since they are older folks who dont understand the car enthusiasts.

I feel that I get less trunk space, less backroom space for those moments , I wont be able to take the car in certain extreme weathers. Then it goes to the materials on the inside. The Gen has an AMAZING interior and great build quality. Whereas the FRS feels like cheap plastic. Though now thinking about it doesn't seem too bad but still something to take into consideration.

I had to practically strip naked and do a song and dance to even get a sale person's attention when I wanted to buy mine! Even then I don't think they believed I was serious at first!!!!
I spend at up to 14 hours a week commuting in mine, all at highway speeds (one plant is 2 hours away the other is 45 minutes). I find it is probably one of the best cars I have ever had for that purpose (although 2 hours in a straight line is not fun) as I am comfortable and relaxed in knowing the car will do what I ask of it should anything happen.
Drove 3 different generations of Lancers and never felt that sense of ease. In fact passing truck on a windy day was sometimes a study in object terror!

But thats exactly what I have heard about the FR-S is about the chirping and the blown engines. It made me concerned because if some cars are doing that at around the <50,000 mile range then whats going to happen at 100,000? That really puts me to ease because, looking at the 2014 and 2015 models I was afraid of what people were saying. I understand that they are the minority, I was just making sure.

I have been in all the cars and when dealers ask me if I want to test drive it I told them no.Because I wanted to see ALL of my prospective options narrowed down on paper and then go in an drive them without having felt as if though I owed the dealer since I drove their car(Even though I know I don't). Plus it doesn't help when they wont leave you alone.
Honestly, probably not the right car for you. Look at the Mustang/Genesis/370Z

The dealership will try to make you pay more BECAUSE of your emotions. But dont let that confuse you with the emotion you get from the car/from driving the car...Emotions for the car is one thing, but don't let that get tangled up in the numbers game dealers are so great at.

And don't get a prius, ever. Those nasty, disgusting, vile things are everywhere on the road. Yuck.

Trunk space is small, but the back seats fold down and I've been able to squeeze quite a bit into the car...Like my wife and I have been shocked by how much we've fit back there before lol. Quality might feel on the lower end, but its all pretty basic inside the frs-wasn't meant to excite.

and backroom space for "moments" will quickly be unimportant not too long after high school haha.

None of the cars listed make great extreme weather cars. Have you considered a wrx? AWD, quick, easily modded, pretty roomy etc.

Lower insurance rates than all the others on the list.
Going to be an ongoing expense as long as you own it.

My subjective judgement from all of your comments and current situation is to keep that beautiful Solara, get a drop-in air filter, catback exhaust, stickier tires, polish the headlight covers (!) and once you finish your residency get an FT-1.

Wait, how long will you be expecting to drive/keep this car?

Are you going to have kids any time soon? Do you drive more than 1 person around?

EDIT: Just saw you're pre-med. If so do your grades warrant you to stay in the states for med school? If not you might want to stick with the solara for a bit, go where you need to and pick up a sweet car when you get back.

Don't want that to come off negatively I have a lot of family/friends in a very similar career path who had to readjust things for their stays abroad / their life through the shit hole that med-school app process is

OP, sounds like you want a nice highway cruiser that won't see much spirited/track use. This car is not for you. It will be too noisy and too slow for what it seems like you want out of the car. Like others have said probably a gen coupe or mustang is what will float your boat. But I suggest test driving all 3 to make sure.
