New f150 won't be out until next year, though. Then I lose the writeoff.

![]() We love our '04 Z71 Suburban and as far as I know it checks all the boxes @jsimon7777 mentions he needs. Tad bit expensive when new though (I usually buy used, and with trucks usually 5 to 10 years used).

The best truck out there right now is the Ram 1500. Objectively speaking, based on third party results (Motor Trend / Texas ToTY / etc)
I'd at least check it out, you'd be surprised. And if anyone wants to say "herp derp their transmission issues suck" those issues are from the early 2000s, they use totally different transmissions now and you're dumb for not doing research. signed, Ram fanboy

We just bought a 2014 Double Cab SR5 Upgrade Package Tundra TRD 4x4 5.7L Flex Fuel for all the reasons you've stated.
http://www.tundratalk.net/forums/tun...v-4x4-trd.html We did TONS of research for months (Ford, Chevy, Dodge, Nissan, Toyota) and the Tundra is ounce-for-ounce exactly what we needed, and it looks like it fits your needs too. We wanted to wait for the TRD Pro, but got impatient (plus it doesn't come in Asphalt to match our FRS )We did the double cab instead of the crew max for the longer bed. We did the Tundra instead of Sequoia since we can put a shell on it, and a queen sized air mattress fits inside the bed for overnight stays at the track without needing a tent. We did the Tundra over all the others for the towing capacity and reliability - I know a bunch of proud Americans are gonna call me an unpatriotic tool for buying a Toyota instead of a Big 3 domestic, but the truth of the matter is that the truck is built in Texas and uses more American sourced parts than any of the domestics do. We did the 5.7 over the 4.6 also for the 401 ft/lbs of towing torque (plus its flex fuel and I'm hoping to get custom tuning on it soon to match our car) ![]()

I just saw that they're taking 6000 off 2014 xlt expeditions, the older style without ecoboost. That's a lot of new truck for the money. I am paralyzed by choices. I don't want to tow often, but I will want to tow sometimes, and if I want to tow, it will probably not be 5000lbs. More like 7-10k.

If you can find one with the optional heavy duty towing package, that bumps you up to 9K lbs.
edit: Even with the F150's, examine the max towing weight. Depending on the engine and wheelbase, it varies pretty significantly. |

), for the towing and hauling combined with camping, the Tundra kills the Expedition. It would probably have to come down to price difference between the two if you're not trying to tow 10k lbs. Expedition goes up to 9k, Tundra up to 10.5k. |

If towing is going to be a factor, here is a good chart of all the 2014 trucks. Start on page 18.
http://www.jayco.com/files/pages/002...wing-guide.pdf Like @gramicci101 said, there can be a big difference between models within makes. Last edited by Campo; 10-17-2014 at 01:06 PM. Reason: forgot to include link to chart |

I did test drive a Ram and a Silverado. I thought the RAM was pretty nice, but the double-cab rear seats are too uncomfortable and crammed. Same as the Silverado. The Tundra double cab feels much more spacious. We'd keep the truck at least 5 years, so we'd be getting into reliability issues if there are any. American cars aren't as unreliable as German ones, but man, Honda and Toyota just spoil me. I know the FR-S and BRZ have gotten crappy ratings for reliability, but they're nothing like what I went through with my BMWs. Not even close.

If you get a Tundra, get the 5.7L. The 4.6L has much less towing capacity. It seems like the 2x4's have a few hundred more pounds of towing capacity than the 4x4's.

Yeah. The 4.6L has better economy but drops to mid-sized SUV towing ability. My wife and kids love to camp. I hate it, but if it means I can get them to go to the track with me... which means I can go to the track more often... Oh boy!
