Bridgestone's European subsidiary is the largest minority shareholder in Nokian according to Wikipedia. Looking at both company's new winter tires, it seems probable that they are sharing technology. I will be ordering the Bridgestone Blizzak WS80 soon. I like the fact that it is a brand new design and it has an H speed rating, which may translate into good dry road behavior. While the tire is too new to have been tested, I think it will be a top tire for winter when it does finally get snow and ice for testing. I chose this over the Nokian Hakkapelitta R2 this time.

I have a spare set of stock wheels. I was planning on buying snow tires for them, but is going down to 16" that much of an improvement?

Cheaper tires and a more compliant ride on New England winter roads are pretty much it.

16x7 vs 16x6.5? Would the 6.5s actually do noticeably better in snow?

16 or 17 by 7 inches. Don't worry about the weight.

You want a good winter wheel?

Run a 215/45/17 dedicated winter tire, no performance winter tire and you'll be fine.
