I have the steering wheel all the way out, and fairly high. My seat is all the way down. When cruising, I sit relaxed to ease my back. When driving spirited I sit closer and more straight up

^^exactly this. Gotta slouch with a helmet. Has anyone played with extending the steering column AND keeping the stock steering wheel?

I've searched but haven't found the tall-guy solution.

- Legs slightly bent when clutch fully depressed (allows brace against dead pedal if needed)
- Steering wheel as close to me as possible and just low enough so that I can still see most of the gauges (more leverage on wheel possible)
- Seat back upright enough so that arm is relaxed and bent while hands at 10 + 2 position and allowing wrists rest at top of steering wheel when straight arm w/o stretching (more support from seat and leverage on wheel)

Tall guy solution... lower aftermarket chair, extended steering wheel column, or custom headliner panel? there's a good ~2" of space above the headliner...

thanks for all the good info, i found this thread very helpful. i think i've been too far back and my seat back not reclined enough. the reason i say this is that i am not tall, but it's a very tight squeeze to drive with a helmet on. i'll try your suggestions. i suspect it will make things more comfortable

Driving with helmet: Flip the headrest around 180 degrees so that it points backwards.

Cruising around and going to work... ^that but with the seat reclined a bunch of clicks.

5'9 here.
This is exactly how I set my driving position at the track. In my case that means extending the steering wheel all the way out and sitting somewhat vertical.

One thing I love about the FR-S is that the steering wheel itself is fairly vertical compared to most cars, almost perpendicular to the ground. This frees up your bottom hand when you turn the wheel more than 45 degrees. With my GTI, the steering wheel is angled away (top of the wheel towards the front of the car), which locks up that bottom hand on tighter turns at the track. Love the driving position on the FR-S, pretty much perfect.

On the street or for extended drives, I will recline the back about 1-2 clicks from "race mode".

There is vitrually no comparison between an econobox and a sports car. Econobox = sit up higher, sit more hunched forward reaching for the gear lever. Sports car = sit down low, layed back ready position, shifter falls in hand.

I wouldn't call it more hunched over, and a sports car is nowhere near "laid back" if you're seated properly. It really all depends on how you personally want to sit and adjust the seat to some extent. The steering wheel angle is taken into account depending on the style of car, but it's usually nothing that can't be adjusted for. Afterall, even semi-trucks are raced, with their huge almost horizontal steering wheels...

I'm 6' 2" and I sit like this guy:

Seatback very close to straight up, not as far back as it can go, steering column telescoped out pretty far (in the BRZ, out all the way), seat as low as it will go and with as much rake as possible.

5'6" here, sit pretty close just because I have wee little legs. I like to have the seat fairly upright with my wrists on top of the wheel

All the way down and about a click from fully back. Seat reclined, relaxed, knob always in arms reach without having to lean forward. Adjust mirrors properly and don't let anyone move your seat. Make them go through the other side.

Edit: 6'1"

You'll be surprised how close the driving position is between a Boxster and a Golf GTI once everything is adjusted properly.
