Something that hasn't been mentioned yet . . . 86 in-car footage was a fair bit louder than the BRZ.
An actual difference, or just a product of individual camera/mic & their mounting? |

A better comparison would've been having all 3 drivers drive a few laps around the course in all 3 cars and compared times.
Maybe I'm a conspiracy theorist but something definitely seemed a bit off to me about the ease that the 86 passed the BRZ. It may very well be a little faster and handle a bit better, but I don't think the differences are that drastic as to what happened there without driver fault. |

Also - it is possible that KMS is right in terms of a bias in terms of which driver wins, as Keiichi Tsuchiya is highly-respected (so Naoki may not have wanted to pass him) and pretty much the face of Best Motoring (well, him and Kasumi Kondo). I notice in terms of the battles, Keiichi Tsuchiya wins a lot of them - either this is truly skill, or a mixture of skill, and of the other drivers perhaps letting off a little (but probably not much). Either way, a N/A 4-cyl in the under $30k price range that hits low 14s for the 1/4 looks pretty good in terms of straightline performance (IIRC, the previous Celica GT-S, also a lightweight high-revver managed low 15s and maybe high 14s with the higher fuel cutoff in earlier models) |

I find it interesting that the BRZ was quicker off the line in both videos. I wonder if that's driver skill/feel or if the suspension settings have something to do with that?
Could it be that the difference in spring rates that make the Toyota version more tail-happy give the Subaru the edge keeping traction on the launch? Interesting trade-off if this is true.. |

Sometime BM can be very bias as seen from previous BM series. And yes 80% of the time tsuchiya always wins. And also japanese cars are always faster than some exotics car in BM, lol.
Only thing that i know the difference between 86 and brz is the spring rate or shock stiffness is just tad different. Also exhaust on the some model brz are different as well.

He only lost because he braked too early for that turn. Can't blame him for breaking early in a car he isn't familiar with. It could just be that Tsuchiya is more familiar with the car and knew that he could go deeper into the turn without braking. Also it didn't look like they were racing at 10/10ths. Anyways what matters is the cars are both even through the entire track, not like the other videos where the 86 looked much faster.

Yeah, I noticed that too. It's probably mostly due to the mic setup but you can clearly hear a loud rushing air noise in there. I hope that's not what it sounds like IRL. I don't want it to sound like I have an intake leak everytime I accelerate...

Perhaps there's a difference in the intake noise tube, a change in diaphragm stiffness for example. It would explain the apparent increase in intake noise in the 86.

Timed it when the 86 took off in the beginning from 0-100. Got 6.2. Seems accurate since Motortrend attained the exact same result (even though my methods were WAY rougher.) Not insanely fast but early 6's to 60 is pretty quick in my book.
