In my opinion Toyota = White by default. When I look back at supras, celicas, and aristos seems like the main color was white followed by red and black.

I put my order in on a Whiteout MT, but damn it seems like that's what everyone's going with. I really gotta see it for myself though, I mostly liked it cuz over how it looked super white and blown out, not a huge fan of the creamy colour it can have. Also scratches! Tons easier to hide. I've actually been considering going Hot Lava, since it seems so unloved. I just got find some and see how they look in person!

Don't worry about popularity. The FR-S is not going to sell like other cars where you'll see one all the time, although it won't necessarily be a rare car either. Get the color you want. On the BRZ side, the most popular color by far is World Rally Blue, but that's the color I want and therefore the color I'm getting. One driving factor for me is the fact that it's the color that defines Subaru. Hot Lava may be a Scion exclusive but it doesn't define the brand in the same way that World Rally Blue defines Subaru. I agree that you should try to see the different colors in person before making a firm decision. Go to a Subaru dealer and look at the colors on Subaru models. You'll be able to see every one of them except Hot Lava, of course. I saw WRB on a WRX STI and that's how I knew with certainty that it was the color for me.

I stopped by scion Santa Monica today, and I was told the Subaru dealership had the BRZ in the showroom. I drove down the street only to be told it left for another dealership two days ago. just missed it.

My Subaru Legacy is in Satin White Pearl (the same color as whiteout) and I love it. The pearl is not "OBVIOUS" at first glance, but every curve and corner seems to shine and almost look silvery in sunlight. I think it's a GREAT color, and you'll be very happy with it.
