Porsche plays loose with curb weights
http://www.planet-9.com/987-cayman-b...b-weights.html I think they might be honest if it's a theoretical car so stripped they don't even offer it. Otherwise add 100-200lb.

2014 Cayman Base 6MT - 3059 lbs. [Porsche lists the base Cayman 6MT at 2910 lbs.] http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/...an_first_test/ 2013 FR-S Base 6MT - 2730 lbs. [Scion lists the base FR-S at 2758 lbs.] http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/...son/specs.html And to show the FR-S weight isn't a fluke: 2013 FR-S Base 6MT - 2737 lbs. http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/...gti_specs.html Also some measured weights for the Boxster S: 2013 Boxster S 6MT - 3066 lbs. [Porsche lists the 6MT Boxster S at 2910 lbs.] http://www.edmunds.com/car-reviews/t...rack-test.html 2013 Boxster S PDK - 3155 lbs. [Porsche lists the PDK Boxster S at 2976 lbs.] http://www.roadandtrack.com/car-revi...65-1-roa0813-2 The good news is, Porsche also under-rates their HP specs (or has minimal drivetrain loss, depending on how you look at it). EDIT: sorry, typed Boxster when I meant Cayman.

I stand by my original statement.
The new MX5 has potential... if it's got more than 185hp, FRS/BRZs everywhere will weep. |

![]() It would definitely make things interesting, especially if Toyota/Subaru responded. Might light a fire under their rears.

On the other hand, if you were going to spend 25-30k on a tiny, roofless, light-weight sports car, why not get a Lotus Elise instead? I'd take an '05 or earlier Elise over a Miata any day.

Agreed. I loved driving it, but I had to stand in it and slide down the seat to get in, and my belt got hung up on the door striker when I got out, leaving me flailing futilely until my wife saved me. And I couldn't drive it with my shoes on because I kept hitting multiple pedals. Plus, it has a VERY solid suspension.

I guess if you live somewhere where you'd need the roof up a lot of the time, the Elise admittedly would suck. Getting in and out with the roof on is a pain in the ass.
In fairness though, I can't imagine owning a Miata as an only car either. Are they really practical enough? The trunk on the Miata looks like it couldn't handle much more than an average trip to the grocery store (though in fairness, at least your food wouldn't be cooked by the time you got home-- unlike the trunk of the Elise!). |
