i hope that wheels has it wrong, this change would make the original project ubselete as a entery lvl affordable sports RWD car is neither upmarket or comfy..
if there is any aspect of truth to this, perhaps toyota is designing another car and rumors started mixing..

Toyota's market research already suggests buyers would prefer a 4 door sedan. That is why Toyota builds them. Nothing wrong with a FT-86 Sedan if it sells more and makes money for Toyota, why would they not build it. It would be marketed below a Lexus IS250 for those who want a sporty car without the luxury weight.

Then like other companies through the ages (Mustang/Falcon, Solara/Camry), develop a 2 door sports car from the sedan. Since most parts are the same it will be a cheaper car too. A FT-86 on its own would probably not sell for long if it loses money.

This is because:

""Akio Toyoda may want to bring driving excitement back to Toyota, but he and his team have two major hurdles to overcome: The brands's limited enthusiast base and the fact that Japan's youth have very little interest in cars.""

Nobody has an interest in cars anymore! Everybody sees cars as a means of transportation, not as an experience. Everyone in the USA drives an auto. Europe's a bit better cause they still drive manual tranny cars. Asia keeps all the good cars for themselves, so if they aren't interested in cars, who is?

There are very few of us who actually try to make our cars better, and even fewer who do it not based on the Fast and Furious lol .

This is probably why Toyota is considering a sedan version of the FT86.

Report: Nissan abandons thoughts of 240SX revival, ponders Sentra coupe instead

As much as we'd love to see Nissan hearken back to its performance roots with a remake of the classic 240SX coupe, it seems the Japanese automaker is content to earn sales by sticking to the tried-and-true approach of offering competent vehicles at attainable prices. In other words, if Nissan has a sporty-looking coupe in the pipeline, it'll be more of a Scion tC competitor than a Hyundai Genesis Coupe-challenger.

This revelation comes by way of Larry Dominique, chief product planner for Nissan North America, who tells Wards "he would be more inclined to do a derivative of the Sentra than introduce an entirely new nameplate." Nissan's internal data suggests that it could only sell about 30,000 240SX coupes in America per year, which isn't enough to make a convincing production argument. Sad, sure, but very likely also true.

Somewhere in the halls of Toyota and Subaru executives are thanking Nissan for being little bitches because that's 30,000 more Toyobaru FT-86 sales.
