Traction OFF Switch (Automatically)
Hey All,
After getting sick of holding down the traction button for 3 sec each time I get into the car, I installed a latching switch on the dash (see images below). When switched on, it will turn off TRC and VSC when the car is started. Initially I hooked this straight into the existing circuit, but the ECU is a little too clever for this. When you go over a certain speed and have the button 'jammed' on, it detects a switch failure and turns all features back on. To overcome this issue, I have re-used a circuit I designed for a seat belt warning light in ICV's. Now the line is held low for approx 7sec. The illuminated 'Halo' is connected to the interior illumination rheostat circuit, so it dims with the other functions. I plan to get a small laser etched switch plate surround with words like 'TRACK MODE' If there is any interested in the parts or instructions to hook up - let me know. -Mig |

What would you charge for a plug and play kit? I dont want it off all the time, just want to be able to 'flip a switch' and have it auto-off on every car start until i flip the switch back (aka for the entire weekend of autox so I dont forget half the time).

looks really clean, did you have a batch of cca blanks made up? It doesn't look very complicated, I don't see any timer chips or relays, how does it disengage?
fwiw, I went this way: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10621 also this being the diy section, I think there would be a lot of interest in more detailed instructions.

Not trying to thrash on your idea here, but seriously people, it's 3 seconds. With all the time and effort involved to make this a functional kit, even if it took only 5 minutes to install and only cost $30 for the kit, depending on how much you make an hour, you could do the 3 second feature over 1000 times before you would see a return on your "investment".

No, I have a lot of credit card debt out I need to get caught up on before I spend any more money on my car, including fixing the AC. Luckily I have my Tacoma that is my daily so it not a necessity to fix the AC on my car.

First up, each to their own. For me, I really dislike the monetary valuation of everything. I actually make quite a bit per hour at work, as an engineer for an Japanese car OEM. But I also do all my own car mods, lawn mowing, cooking etc. Offcourse I could pay someone to do it for less than the time 'costs' me, but that’s not the point. I also do work for others getting the ECU's etc. working in their project cars. Things like reverse engineering the security system etc. I do charge, but nowhere near what I should. Why? Because I enjoy it, I like the challenge and I like working on interesting problems. It's entirely different to working as part of a corporation. If everything in the world was developed only on the parameters you gave, it would be a very bland place. As for the 3sec. Shure not a long time. But if you are tracking the car and forget to do it, or stall and restart etc. it could be a pain in the arse when you hook into a corner and the fun police takes over. -Mig |

But like you said I know I'm probably over thinking it way too much but it all goes back to, it's only 3 seconds. And if you're at the track and you spin out or stall, well that run/pass/lap is ruined anyways so you should have plenty of time to hold down that button for 3 seconds again.

Thats how it works. You depress the round button and it will turn off the TRC / VSC each time you start the car. If you want it off, just release the switch (Which will stop it doing it next time you start) and if you want to change the state you just use the normal button. Plug and play is tricky, not worth tracking down the plugs for a handfull of units. I spliced this in (no need to cut anything). If there is interest I might put together a kit with all the fly leads soldered in ready for splicing. |

Whats a CCA Blank? The circuit intentonaly doesn't use any digital chips (like 555 timers). These are susecptable to nosie and can flase trigger in this type of circuit. For simplicity it's just an R/C timer triggering a FET. The other transistors are there to discharge the system quickly when the ignition is switched off. This was originaly for seatbelt warning light which are required when registering a home made car in Australia. |
