I looked at it, didn't see anything about proximity on the website.

You can calibrate a Kevo to not unlock if your phone is inside the door as opposed to outside the door. Kevo uses BT LE.

There is something about holding the fob to the start button if the battery is dead to start the car there is for sure something passive its not NFC but I can check if its RFID tomorrow at work.

This is more on the illegal side.

Can it be done - absolutely as thieves in Europe have been hacking RFID keyfobs for ages before it came to the US.

They use notebooks to scan and hack the RFID system ( they just connect a 10 dollar usb dongle ). You can see youtube videos of them doing it to BMW's so yes a Subaru system would be no more difficult. The problem is the software is not exactly on the legal side to use so a mobile version is possible but it is all over torrent sites. The hacking is much more rampant now with the internet.

Here is a simple old video on youtube.

It is also showing up as a product they can buy and walk around with to brute force hack the "simple" RFID version we have in our keys.

Most likely or maybe they have a zigbee network installed. Would be cool if they did though.
