Although the semi closed design was in good practice, the hypereutetic pistons werent cast properly, and yes came the term glass pistons. Also known for ringland snapping and such. The only advantage the EJ has over the FA is the amount of crankcase oiling it can do. Unfortunately the FA wasnt built for that extra 10-20 PSIa.

What's the purpose of a forum member who's "never boosted" saying something like "correct me if I'm wrong..." and then trying to argue an incorrect assumption with someone who actually knows a bit about the subject in question?
Operator error does not constitute wastegate failure. They really are pretty reliable. |

It's more than possible. It is literally one of the most common causes. Look it up if you have to, I'm not making this up...

so basically if you get an STi, keep it to bolt ons and such? also, whats the deal with this great FA20 motor? so the compression ratio is too high and thats why they blow? then i dont understand whats the deal with the new WRX. isnt that a FA20 with a turbo? why is that safe? and if thats the case then wouldnt the best engine swap for an 86 be that exact motor, the FA20 DIT??

The fa20 is the strongest smartest engine Subaru has ever built. The fa20dit in the wrx is lower compression, turbo and uses a less sophisticated injection system.
The ej in the sti is poop and blows up. Fullblown made more hp on a stock fa20 then some built ej's can handle. There are probably 15 threads on fa20dit swaps. Its worthless. It won't fit. It has a crappy turbo and intercooler and doesn't have the port injections system which I think will be the downfall in 5 years like every other di only car on the market thats been a catastrophe. You will see fa20 4d-s swaps into wrx's I guaranty it. Fa20s are blowing up from user error or abuse. 400whp on e85 is getting more and more common on a stock engine.
