I'm beginning to wonder if the factory bushings aren't prone to wearing out. There was a mount on my Mazdaspeed 3 that I had to replace twice because the bushing in it wore out so badly.

The mazda, the engine is placed on the wrong side then more stress on the engine mounts... If you speak about engine mounts.

I consider it more of a transmission mount. It was kind of a pork chop shaped thing that mounted to the back, not one of the ones over the wheels. Guys would upgrade the piece that connected to the car's frame but I never saw where anyone else replaced that piece. The bushing in mine wore out twice.

regarding tye300's post above,
he installed the differential inserts after his rear brace.

he mentioned that he did not hear any noise with the rear brace and without the different inserts,

then when he installed the inserts he started hearing the noises.


I've installed the outrigger inserts and the diff bushings.

I am now hearing the "clunk" when i shift 1st and 2nd.
I do not care about the whine, i am just bothered by the "clunk"

I am wondering if i remove the diff inserts, but leave the rear outrigger in, will the "clunk" go away?

Probable yes, but the clunk will not broke anything.

Maybe try it and let us know, and if that works, I will maybe do it also...

I removed the diff inserts and they removed the sound. This is with leaving the outriggers in. I think I will try to put just the bottoms of the diff inserts in to slightly stiffen it up but leave a little isolation from diff and frame, in theory that is. Will report when I get a chance.

I think the clunk happens because the diff transfers movement to the subframe itself with all the rigidity. The sound then is more perceptible because the subframe is connected to the cars chassis. It is unnerving at first, but you'll get used to it. LOL

For me its also from the 2 to 3, its like this for you too? I think it's almost in all gears.

The sound come from the front, from the clutch engagement. I can avoid the sound if I really care when I shift and when I release the clutch pedal.

Adding some data points to the thread, I have the diff bushing inserts installed as well and I get the clunk going into 2nd and 3rd as well unless I am super gentle on slipping the clutch.

I also have the rear sub-frame bushings.

yes ive gotten used to it. I really like how the car drives now. like, I REALLY like how it drives.

yes. its in all gears. its the sound of clutch engaging. like 2 pieces of metal slapping eachother making a "clunck" sound. Im sure its always been there before. We just hear it now. In all cars, and when the metal plates engage there's ALWAYS this sound.

Im not worried about it anymore. its just "unnerving" haha

i'd actually be worried if there is no more "clunk" sound. if your clunk sound is gone that means your clutch is slipping at all times. lol
