I think it might actually be the same driver..
Gloves, jacket and helmet are identical.. The way he steers the car and changes are similar too.. |

Is it just me or are BRZ fans a little too sensitive about these kinds of comparisons?
I mean, no one is saying this isn't an easy thing to fix. Slap an aftermarket suspension on there and you can do what you want. But it is a very interesting result and one of the most indicative indicators of how these cars behave at the limit around a relatively tight course. Personally as someone who likes to enjoy the car completely stock it gives me a great sense of the cars and just reconfirms that the FRS is the one I want. A car tuned for under steer is actually a good thing most of the time to protect drivers from themselves and I'm glad it exists as an option even though it's not what I'm personally looking for. First, the problem on this forum was FRS/BRZ against the world, now it seems the community is getting more and more divided with these FRS vs. BRZ threads which overreactions from both sides. As far as I'm concerned we're all in this together. The cars exist as two separate entities for a reason. Just choose your flavor of ice cream and stop the hating. |

I'd just better not hear any excuses at the track from anyone: "wahhhhh, my car is more suited for oversteer/understeer than yours, so that's why my FRS/BRZ wasn't as fast as your BRZ/FRS"

Speaking as someone who's actually done Tsukuba circuit many times, and one of those times in a spec Miata for a 4 hour enduro - saying the BRZ understeers more is a very, very relative statement. Neither of those cars are showing much understeer at all, especially considering the amount of power they have. The new Tsukuba surface is very smooth and sticky.
The BRZ does have a bit more under push, but it's smooth and progressive with less drama. I'd say Subaru stuck to their "tuning at Nurburgring" schtick and setup the suspension there. More allowance for mid-corner bumps so you don't lose it easily. It's not going to be the ideal setup for a smooth racetrack, but it'll be faster on real world roads. Trade-offs, where do you make em. And anyways, if anybody is serious about competing with either of these twin brothers, they'll be committing mayhem on the suspension and setup, which makes the comparison of stock a bit of a moot point. Pretty cool. I was surprised at the difference. It looked like the BRZ went faster through the turns but didn't carry as much momentum or something because the GT caught up and passed it every time.

While I understand little about suspension, many of my autox buddies do.
I initially was leaning to the FRS, but since I intend to keep in stock tire class, I can change shocks but not springs. They suggested I would be happier with the stiffer springs of the BRZ with adjustable shocks vs. the softer springs of the FR-S with adjustable shocks. I am still happy with my red limited. |

Hahaha I can see how this video and this conversation will start to make people worry and second guess their choice in which car to get. Guys.....Don't worry about it too much. Especially for the people that really won't be pushing their car to the limit.

Akihiko Nakaya's time attack on Tsukuba Circuit in a BRZ
Lap time is about 1:10 (from 0:08 to 1:18 in the video), which is about as fast as the original NSX. Not bad I guess?

The chassis is the same, any handling differences are due to the suspension tuning, as stated by previous posters. It goes to say that this comparison has no bearing on those who will be changing springs and dampers. These are the same car and any move to engineer differences between the two is just that: (badge) engineering.
If you haven't tuned the suspension after increasing horsepower by 50% over stock, you deserve whatever happens to you. |
