It's the oxygen in the water that makes them rust after washing. Use a low-oxygen content water for washing your car. Regular tap water is over 33% oxygen.

Yeah, I'd assume people wouldn't be that dumb, but you're right, you never know... Although it will just wear off (many cheaper pads are very sloppy with their paint jobs and they wear in fine).
