Memory based exams don't show whether or not people can actually think for themselves. We have a Chinese educated 'engineer' at work. Has a fantastic ability to calculate force of pneumatic cylinders off the top of his head. However can't tell if it's mounted in the wrong direction even when shown by three people...
Had a conversation last night about this, seems like one of the few places we come out on top is in higher education and skilled jobs (medicine, engineering, research) and it turned to how our society is so individualistic.

A Japanese train system would never work here, everything has to run on "MY" time, zero inconveniences allowed otherwise it's crap. I don't even have to say anything on the topic of nationalized healthcare. Outlawing private schools? Never, Paul needs to learn all the testaments.

Yet there is a tidal wave of immigrants here for our education willing to pay a fortune, to try and bring back the knowledge we grow up with. We don't celebrate the guy who follows procedure and gets 100%, we rabidly watch House M.D.

I think in the West we have the drive to follow our passion, be it education or Dr. House. This leads to a desire to learn and think. Yes some people waste it on fan fiction and theories, but those who pursue significant things contribute to America's technical domination.

In the East it is about getting a big number regardless of how fudged, irrelevant or unrepeatable it is, then hoping they get you employment in a position where the system (corporate or political) takes care of you while you coast and minimally produce, but maximally attend.

But the West is where the systems are developed and revolutionised. Think of what refined 3D printing will do to China's glass overproduction-based economy...

The social issues can be a bit of a problem, but they don't interfere too aggressively. And other places have their own different social anchors.

And in keeping with the eagles:

You guys can celebrate a lot too. Like being slightly better at hockey on average, 'cept for Ottawa. And having more moose. And... cleaner streets. And... did I mention the moose? Oh yeah, Mountie hats are epic!
