The only people stupid enough to pay that kind of markup are those with disposable income and don't give a $#!T, who just want the latest and greatest. There are people out there and we've dealt with them at my dealership: a woman went through an R8, TT roadster, Camaro convertible, and a Mini cooper, each traded with less than 2k miles. They get screwed on trade-in because they're basically buying a new car, letting it take it's biggest depreciation by driving it off the lot, and then turning it in after less than a year. Absolutely insane, but thankfully these people are few and far between.
Like everyone else said: a penny over MSRP? Walk away. Wait as long as it takes. The dealer will see that no one is willing to pay that money and drop the price. These aren't rare enough where they have that kind of leverage, and it won't take them long to see it.

It's almost been about to be a year for my ownership of the legacy and knew fully well that I was intentionally going to be trading it away after I got it, but even right now I actually have takers who want my car too. I know I was going to lose on depreciation but not by that much imo. It was the gamble I wanted to take and it looks like to me it will pay off.

You bought a pre-owned Legacy, correct? (2009 according to your profile)
I'm talking about brand new cars that depreciate ~30% the moment they drive off the lot. Not the same as buying pre-owned. And doing it once is one thing; I'm talking about people who do it habitually.

And then gets a TT, and a Camaro, and a Mini after it?! I know, right? That person has issues. I talked to a guy last week looking to trade in a 2012 Chevy Avalanche with 5k miles for an Audi A5 cabriolet. He just bought a Scion iQ a month prior; I think he said he goes through 2-3 cars per year. Nutcase!

Just negotiate to a price that you're happy with, if not just wait a little while till you get more money or a better deal. |
