A lot of the turbo Subaru guys (including myself) use Rotella t6 5w40 with really great results. Not sure if that would be too think for the FA engines or not but if you're pushing boost, I would think you would be ok. Whatever you use I would recommend doing some UOAs to get an idea of how well the oil you choose is holding up for your setup.

Now synthetic oils are so much more high tech than they used to be an even these 40w race oils flow like a 10w so I wasn't concerned so much as I was aware of some possible negatives. Oil pressure loss has been observed at high rpm on track cars, the bearings are pretty thin so pressure requirements will be high, I'm running an oil cooled and journal bearing turbocharger, so all that added up to my decision. It's warm right now so honestly I haven't observed any side effects at all, and if anything I no longer hear clanky metalic sounds at start up anymore. No doubt this will sap some NA power so those guys might be better off with 5w40. Hope that helps and so far my FRS has taken serious bosted track abuse! Thanks, Phil Grabow |

Sorry to revive an old thread.
I was wondering if any of you have a new opinion on the oil you were using a year ago, or a change of heart, anything really :P |

I'm using Motul 300v 0w20. I think I'm going to try 30w on the next oil change. Oil pressures get kinda low at the track

Mobil 1 05w-30 here w/ Liqui Moly (3721) Cera Tec Friction Modifier.
Following oil changes would be Mobil 1 05w-30 with Liqui Moly 2009 Anti-Friction Oil Treatment .

I was told it a heavier oil than 0/20w would interfere with the variable cam timing as it reduces the ability to make adjustments quick enough with a higher viscosity so don't use it .

Then why does Subaru recommend 5w30 in the owners manual and put 5w30 in the fa20dit that has the same cams and clearances?

The manual also states 5-30 can also be used.

We have tried several different grades of oil. All Motul.
H Tech 0w20 H Tech 5w30 300v 0w20 300v 5w30 After analysing all, we now run 300v 5w30 in both NA and turbo applications. Our results mimick Toyota Racing NZ, who run 5w30 in the TR86 race cars. Stick with 0w20 if your car is mostly a street vehicle, and is NA. It will provide marginally better fuel economy. Which is essentially why it is the factory fill weight. |
