DANG! I'm another one with full coverage for $80. Record is completely clean other than the recent accident which is still under "investigation"

I pay $165/mo for two brand new cars and a two year old literbike. Guess I'm not doing too bad...But then I have a completely clean record.

You're not in Florida.

I had great rates when I lived in Tennessee. Then I moved to Louisiana, and my insurance more than doubled.

What you pay depends in large part on where you live and how stupid the drivers there are on average. Certain states just suck when it comes to insurance rates. Louisiana's rates are high because we have drive-thru daiquiri bars. Florida's rates are high because they have a bunch of retirees who should no longer be driving mistaking the gas for the brake and smashing through the front window of Miami Subs.

I live in NJ and the same here. You have a license but no car you still must pay for car insurance unless you live alone. Yes it's crazy but there are so many insurance company lawyers here they will make you pay until you're homeless.

This happened to a friend of mine that grew up in Manhattan. She got her drivers license when she was eligible but never owned or drove a car until she bought a VW Bettle when she was 21 and no longer in NYC.

She got hit big time because they counted her as having been an UN-insured driver.

I don't know why this is a surprise. This is how it works. You get dinged for not always carrying insurance.

It's pretty standard for insurance to go up if you have had an absence in coverage. I think it's about 15%premium per month not insured. Happens on medical too.

Get a quote for months 6-12 after you have been insured for 1-6. Take out a loan to pay the 6 month in full if 6-12 goes down.

You're right, it is a scam until you need it. The same with all insurance assuming the insurance company doesn't give your rear end a shaft when you need them.

I have already claimed insurance on both car and health insurance before and having insurance paid way off more than I ever paid into it.

Even if it isn't required it's still a good idea to have insurance even if you don't have a car. When I sold my car and was deployed last year my insurance was $0.42 for seven months and it shows for insurance later on that you've never had a gap in coverage.

Plus if you're going to rent a car I'd much rather have my own insurance than use the rental company's insurance where they also charge you for each day it's out of service.

For the OP if you're not over 25 and/or married you're going to have to either suck up your pride and drive something cheaper or be prepared to pony up.

Not only that. But, if most insurance companies see you dropped your insurance after totaling a car as a huge risk.

Totaling a car then trying to switch companies is a common pratice, which usually will result in a huge increase of risk for the ins. company = higher prices. People try it all the time when they wreck and have to pay $20+ a month on a higher rate.

Going without insurance and not having a car shouldn't ping you for higher insurance but it does. What I suggest is just asking your parents to add you to their policy. In the long run, it is better for you.

Florida is very strict when it comes to driving and insurance. If you can't get on a family members policy, you'll have to bite the bullet and pay the high premium to get insurance. If you have any vehicles registered to you and are not insured the state will automatically suspend your license, I have also seen the state suspend a persons license for not having insurance for more than two years.
