You need to understand the car in the context of how advanced it was for a country only 15 years out of occupation. Think about a well off 70 year old japanese guy today, he was born into a country under occupation which was destroyed and people were starving, he grew up in a country which had a manufacturing reputation somewhat similar to china has today ('Made in Japan' in the '50's meant 'cheap crap') and then in his twenties a Japanese company produced a japanese car which put the European exotics to shame. It was the car which announced that Japan was back and could be proud again.

That 70 year old guy is pretty well off now and the 2000GT is not only a brilliant car and extremely rare but it is an icon and a symbol of Japanese engineering and manufacturing returning to the world stage as a leader. It's the most iconic japanese supercar ever made.

you need to understand how many dollars a million is haha. all kidding aside, im very aware of how the perspective of japanese build quality has changed over the last 60 years or so. it didnt really put exotics to shame. it competed with things like the e type and maybe even the 911. while i wont deny that the 2000gt is in the conversation, i think its the 240z thats had the biggest impact and the most iconic japanese car.
