1967 Toyota 2000GT most expensive Asian car ever sold at $1.2M

Quote:
Toyota's agelessly beautiful 2000GT has been sold by RM Auctions for $1.16 million, making it the new record holder for the most expensive Asian car ever sold. As always, rarity played a big factory in driving up the price; just 351 2000GT models were built, and only 62 left-hand-drive cars (like this one). The classic Toyota, standout member of Texas car-collector Don Davies' paddock, was originally a US-delivery car that spent time in a collection back in a Japan before returning to Texas just a short time ago. The car last sold in March of 2011, for just $650,000.

Enthusiasts will recognize the 2000GT as perhaps the most heralded Japanese classic of all time. The Toyota was a contemporary of the Jaguar E-Type – though one that obviously sold in a fraction of the English car's numbers – that was well reviewed by the motoring press of the day. Sometimes referred to as Japan's first supercar, the 2000GT boasted a 150-horsepower, dual overhead cam, 2.0-liter straight-six engine; a five-speed manual transmission; and a reported top speed of over 135 miles per hour.

RM described this record-setting example as, "the finest and most authentic 2000GT to come to market in recent years," equating it with blue chip classic exotics like the Ferrari Daytona and Lamborghini Miura.

First Toyota 2000GT produced goes up for sale

Quote:
A design and engineering icon, the Toyota 2000GT is the forefather of all Japanese supercars, the ancestor to which the Acura NSX, Nissan GT-R and Lexus LFA must pay homage. It's rare enough to find a 2000GT for sale, but the example being offered by Maine Line Exotics is particularly special.

MF10-100001 is the first Toyota 2000GT produced, and one of the three that Toyota delivered to Shelby American Racing in 1967 to be prepped for the 1968 SCCA season. Two of those cars raced under the Shelby-Toyota banner in 1968. MF10-100001 wore the #23 and was driven by Davey Jordan.

How much does Maine Line Exotics want for this important piece of automotive history? How does $1.7 million grab you? Head over to Maine Line Exotics for more information.

They are interesting cars but almost impossible for any one over about 5"9" to fit inside. I sat in one when I was in Okinawa in the 70s. At 6'2" and 185LB it was damn near impossible for me to get in and out of let alone drive it.

That one looks like it would be an even tighter fit now.

Funny you say that, I heard that when they used one for one of the James Bond movies (if I'm not mistaken, the only time a japanese car was a bond car), Sean Connery didn't fit in it, and they ended up turning it into a convertible... specifically for the movie, or more specifically for Connery...

EDIT: just saw the vid.. seems the story I heard was true

Do you have a source or link?

I know years and years ago they did go for around $500k-$600k.

But recently, they have been hitting the million dollar mark.

Only 351 were ever built. Thats less than even the LFA. And as this thread pointed out, sadly some of them have not survived.

Lol, Why shouldn't they be going for that much? Its a very rare and collectible car.

Well that is your opinion, and that is fine. In addition to being very rare, I think it is a very beautiful car. It also has a lot of history for Toyota. As we all know cars like the Supra traced its root back to the 2000GT.

personally, i lover them. i just dont think it should cost more than an f40 or 959 and so many other cars that i feel were at least as impactful. i dont believe its worth 100 times what a 240z is considering how similar they are.

So do you think a Ferrari 250 GTO is worth 52 million? because one sold for that in 2013.

definitely not but i do think it is a car that should really contend for the most expensive car ever. in my dream reality the p3/4 would probably be the most expensive car ever
