Keep in mind that there are many states that offer a tax break on trade in. That saved me almost $2K when I traded in my BRZ vs trying to sell it myself in the dead of winter.

Example. Dealer is offering you $23K on your trade-in and the car you want to buy from them is $26K. You only pay taxes on the $3K difference, and in a state where tax rates are almost 6-9%, that adds up fast

If you own a Subaru, you can also leverage their guaranteed trade in program if it is better than what the dealer is offering you.

KBB can be your friend.

Last 3 car purchases have gone like this:
Via internet find vehicle I want, negotiate price through email. Use recent sales prices and KBB to get fair purchase price.
Use KBB to get fair trade value for my current vehicle.
Show up at dealer present trade vehicle. See their crappy offer. Tell them I want $XXXX. They say that figure is to high. I show KBB printout, tell them its not to high.
Dealer either coughs up $XXXX or I move on to next dealer.
Only had 1 dealer let me walk so far. One time I had dealer give me different price on car after I showed up. Told them I was promised $XXXX, they said no. I showed them email and they reluctantly gave price in email.

Walk away right there. Screw salesmen and dealers that try to blatantly rip you off.

@robwbright tells it like it is.

A little story...

In 2001 I was "trading in" a 1889 white Chevy Astro I had owned since new, and had over 250,000 miles on it. The head liner was doing the Arabian Tent effect thing, the transmission was slipping ever so slightly, and it was our family vehicle with 3 young boys and two large dogs, so the inside was less than stellar. We were buying a used 2000 Astro that had 30,000 miles on it.

The salesman sent the "appraiser" out who did the normal walk-around, looking in and over.

The appraiser came back with a price of $1500 on the trade, and I just laughed. The Salesguy looked at me with that cocked head spaniel look.

I said, "I tell you what, I'll pretend to believe you are giving me $1500 for the Astro if it makes the deal go quicker, but I still want another $2500 off the car." He laughed, we shook hands and deal done. I'm about 99.9% sure the "milk wagon" went straight to the junk yard for scrap.

Yep. The vehicle you described (and anything like it) was automatically valued at $500 and was offloaded to a wholesaler as soon as we could get rid of it. When he told you $1500, he was giving you $1000 of the markup off the car you were buying. With another $2500 off the vehicle you were buying, they still made at least $500 if they were using the same sort of valuations that my dealer did.

Dealers are happy to do $500 deals all day long - especially if lots of cars are being sold. The salesmen... not so much, since they only made $125 on the deal. Everyone would prefer the $2000 deal, of course.

This also highlights that, unless well established through referrals, most salespeople are effectively making near minimum wage when considering their typical 60 hour work week and 15 new vehicles sold per month. It's no wonder that the average Toyota salesperson's career lasts about 18 months.

Definitely he should walk away, but I know what they were doing. If he had a BRZ - the Subaru dealer could "certify" it then sell it as a CPO BRZ for 26.5-27 like some of these dealers are trying to do (seriously who pays more for a CPO than Heuberger is selling new for). Thus, they could give him more for the car, because they could sell it for more. With the FRS it just gets sold as a used car for probably 22kish.
