Traded my 13 FR-S a couple months ago for a Mustang GT. I got 18.5 in trade. I'm not sure where ya'll are getting those crazy trade in prices, but retail value for my car was 21k, private party a little lower and trade-in lower still. Car was a 2013 Raven with 10k miles. I probably could have fought a little harder and got an extra 1K on the trade, but I got a stupid deal on the Mustang so I really didn't care.
The dumbest thing I did was buy the damn car in the first place. Don't get me wrong, I loved it, but I always wanted a Mustang and the FR-S reminded me everyday of what it wasn't. And even though I sold the car I still browse the forums. I like this forum oddly enough and come back from time to time and check on things. I just wish I could find a Mustang Forum which I like as much. |

Back in October 2013 I sold the FR-S for 24.9k and the dealer wanted 21,900. It had 500 miles lol.

When I was buying another car at Carmax, I had my FR-S appraised out of curiosity. 2013 Whiteout, MT, no options, 13k miles. Was valued at $19k.
Bit lower than I was expecting, but I'm enjoying the car and planning on keeping it for a while, so not a big deal.

Some of you obviously know this and some... maybe not...
Having sold cars, I can tell you that what they tell you they're giving you for your car on a trade is really irrelevant. The cost of the car you're trading for (and the amount the dealer has in it) always has to be factored in... and you will almost always do better selling the car on your own than trading it (of course, you have the hassle of finding a buyer, though). As to negotiating final price of the car you're buying before saying you want to trade, dealers hate it when you do that because it takes away their wiggle room. But what will then happen is that you'll get a lower value on your trade than they would have given you otherwise (that's assuming that you would have negotiated a good deal even if you told them you were trading up front). As to new cars, front side (see invoice) markup is basically the same at every dealer of the same brand. Back side profits (see finance and other) are something that's more difficult to find out. Regardless, if you negotiate well, you should have no problem buying any car within a couple hundred dollars of their invoice - heck, they start at a couple hundred over invoice with wealthy/prominent buyers just to try and get the deal done quickly - unless it's a really high demand item selling for MSRP or higher. Sometimes you can get them down below invoice. As to the used car side of things, my dealership was always aiming to have around $4000 in markup on any car where the asking price was over 10k. The general practice was to try to make $2000 on every deal. Thus, if a person came in looking to trade on a used car, the dealer would look at their trade's trade-in value and offer them $1000 over trade in... which would, of course, still be less than they were expecting. The dealer would them give them $500 or $1000 more and try to close the deal. It would still be under the amount they were expecting for their trade, but getting closer. If the buyer bit, then the dealer trades for a car, sells a car for a $2000 profit and moves on to the next person. If the buyer didn't bite, then the dealer would give up another $500 or $1000 of the markup and tell the buyer they were giving them near retail for their trade. That usually got the deal done and the dealer made $1000-$1500 profit. (Or the other method would be to show the person $1000 over trade in value for their trade and reduce the price of the car they're trading for by $1000... still make $2000 profit). New car trades were trickier because markup from invoice to MSRP when I was there was usually less than $1000 per $10,000 in new car (a $15000 new car had $900 front side markup. A $40,000 new car had about $3900 front side markup). When there's only $1000 to $2000 markup, it's hard to negotiate a profitable trade deal on the front side... the person's trade has a trade in value of, say, $3000, but the person is expecting $5000 out of the trade. Say there's $1500 markup... how are you going to make any money on the front side? Suffice it to say that it was really hard to make any money taking a trade on a new $15,000 car. Salesmen were making 25% of the front side profit margin. As such, it was common for a salesman to make $50 or $100 on a low priced new car sale (but note that the salesmen often get incentives for each new car sale - mine ranged from $50 to $500).

I traded in my '13 SSM BRZ LTD AT, 37K mi., with previous front end collision and at the time in the dealer's shop for a warranty engine replacement for $21K in April. It's been listed on their website for about a month with the price jumping around a bit, but lowest I saw it listed at was $22.3K (highest was around $25K). Paid about $200 over invoice for the new car ('14 WRB LTD AT with a few options at $28.2K) so I think I got a good deal.
