Is Subaru is anything like Toyota, their normal dealership filters are dismally average (maybe one step up from Fram), while their Japanese filters are quite a few steps up, and their original shipping filters are fantastic (though sadly unavailable).


Wal-Mart and Amazon stock major brand name filters which are just fine. (Wix, Purolator, Bosche, K&N, Mobil 1, etc) Frankly, it's much like people complaining about "ebay parts" for cars when it's nothing but a damn sales tool much like a store and has NOTHING to do with the quality of the parts bought. For instance Bosche have an extended performance line that is great. Wix has been consistently rated great. Same with Mobil 1 and Purolator PureONE.

Which still tells me the most important point being missed:

What tangible benefits, other than some 3rd party website cutting up filters to show what crap filter element is used, does an user benefit from running Japan-made Subaru filters versus something Subaru sourced in the US?

Will it void your warranty?
Will it make you lose gas mileage?
Will it give you less engine protection?
Will it be cheaper to run?

That's my point. We all know what the filter internals are like, but what tangible benefits will there be?

If Subaru uses it on the 300k+ cars they sell every year in the US, I'm sure if the filters sourced from the US were crapper there would be a substantial write-off of bad engines.

Nope, as their warranty is quite short compared the average lifespan of cars on the road today. The OEM's have no true vested interest in keeping a car going longer than their warranty coverage...

Lord have mercy this is stupidity at its finest.

I just asked one question, and instead of an answer, I got a bunch of opinions and judgment based on what I was doing. BELIEVE me when I say that if I could have avoided it, I wouldn't have asked here. I know how people are with their precious little oil filters and oil and I know I might as well be bringing up the OJ Simpson case.

But I asked, hoping people would just answer my question and be mature. But nope, instead it turned into opinions being thrown everywhere like fetid dog poop. Peoples' posts being removed, etc.

@roddy Thank you for answering my question. I appreciate the response. Not everyone was being asinine, true, but some are and some had their posts removed.

Well to be fair, your OP sounded like, "OMG, I'm losing my mind. What's going on with these things? Like WTF???" The way I read it, you were already fluffing it up.

Now if titled as "Does this filter fit?" or "Will this filter work for our cars?", I'm sure the responses would have been different.

Stick to OEM filters. They usually have more filter material in them and they are cheap $7-$8. You can pay twice as much for a K&N or Fram platinum, but why would you? 0W20 at the dealership is $5.40 a liter in Canada also, and lots of people on here have spent $$$ and time having oil analysis done, and it performed very well (along with the OEM filter BTW ). Benefit from their experience and save yourself some headaches and $$$. Keep all those receipts as well ( write your mileage on them ). If they give you any hassle over warranty you can say "all OEM oil changes bitches!"

I went through all this BS with my 2012 corolla and it was OEM all the way as far as engine oil goes.
