How is that any worse than people hauling those same boards in an SUV with the hatch open? Rear visibility? I can't see jack out the rear window of an SUV that's fully loaded. What's next, luggage racks? Those block the rear view too. Or is your problem with the open hatch? What about all those trucks driving around with their tailgates hanging down?

The roof of a car sounds like a great place to put a mattress for transport to me. People put skis, bikes, etc. on the roof, so why not a mattress? If you showed up to the store and bought a TV or mattress (say you weren't planning on doing it, which happens a lot), and then you rented a truck, who would drive your car home? Is this really that hard to imagine? How do people get their Christmas trees or whatever home?

I have always liked a close corollary to this:

4200 posts and this? Lets see, the Ferrari stops at a red light. The big pickup truck stops at a normal safe distance behind him. Trouble is truck driver doesn't notice the boards sticking out the back of said Ferrari. Ferrari driver gets a board shoved up his ass. This is just too easy. So let me hold your hand so we can walk through this together. The SUV has more cargo room and is more elevated so the load is more visible. If the SUV is driving with boards hanging far out the back then he's also a Darwin award candidate. Large trucks have no rear view and yet.... A truck with the tailgate down has more rear view so you just made a circular argument. People use racks designed to safely haul the items you mentioned. I suppose you could design a mattress rack to do the same. knock yourself out. Next... plan ahead. A Christmas tree is unlikely to end up shoved up your ass.

@Hot Lava Okay, you can go rent your truck every time you want to carry something long, just don't hit my car because you didn't see it coming from your big tall, safe truck. I won't have boards in the back to get shoved up my ass, hopefully.

Say I drive my Bugatti Veyron to Home Depot because it's a gorgeous day out, and I need something small, but I remember while I'm there that I need a couple new deck planks because the stair is rotted and I don't want someone to break an ankle and sue me for my millions.

Do I risk tying said boards to my roof, drive home and get the more appropriate vehicle, rent the home depot van, or just call friend to pick up the boards for me, and come over to help fix the stair and share a few beers and stay for the evening BBQ?

Even if you are forever alone, you can still rent the HD van, and return it in 1hr, and pick up your Veyron, which will still be in the parking lot.

There is just no excuse to tie stuff to your car without a proper rack, or to cram stuff in the trunk that is just way to long. Like another poster said, if you accidentally buy a f**king bed, they'll probably have free shipping, or it'll cost a fraction of the cost of your bed. Which is probably cheaper than having your oil changed. Why risk a scratch, or losing the load on the road which could cause a serious accident, and other peoples lives.

This like saying, well I accidentally got drunk. Who's going to drive my car home, I really should just do it myself, right now; there are absolutely no other options that are better. Give me a goddam break.

Except I don't think that's it's as unsafe as you make it out to be. Long loads sticking out windows and the back, sure, that's a bit sketchy. Tying something securely to the roof of your car? A bicycle or skis flying off the back of a car is just as bad as a TV or mattress flying off the back of a car, but people trust those little straps and a bar on their racks to keep them secure. Wrapping some rope around the roof of the car should be just as good, provided you have secured it both longitudinally wrt the car and laterally, which I think that Porsche 996 owner did. For the highway I'd be cautious but around town going 25mph I don't think it's a big deal.

The Ferrari with the badass bike on the roof rack is, well... badass. Here's the one that just blew me away the other day. A pickup driving with a mattress on the ladder rack with the mattress bent double and flying in the wind. It's a true fail when you have the correct equipment and still manage to screw it up.
