For me the need is apparent. See, I've learned something here. The image I had in my head of what rice means is different from that of the twins community. I always thought rice meant high performance Japanese and various other small displacement compacts. Typically equipped with loud exhausts, modded engines, handling improvements and usually slammed. I'm actually a little surprised that my preconception is so different from the norm.

So it looks like stanced isn't considered rice. Have to agree with that. Stanced is in my opinion pretty cool though I would never ever do that to my FR-S. For one I think I'd have nightmares of speed bumps and curbs mangling my car.

I blame the internet. Hiding behind a keyboard and calling stuff "rice", has created a bit of fear, and slowed creativity among many, for fear of being called a "ricer".
This. Seems like rice is defined as whatever someone else doesn't like. An actual, clear cut definition doesn't seem to exist. I mean it does, others have already said it in this thread. But that's not a set in stone definition.

Well, any Japanese performance car is rice to dumbass, meathead domestic muscle car guys... but to everyone else, it's the form-over-function or all-show/no-go crowd.

Stanced definitely is rice. Stanced/hellaflush/demon camber = idiocy = rice.

Anything you do to your car that lowers the resell value, apart from natural depreciation and typical wear and tear. That includes performance "upgrades".

So basically, anytime you think of doing anything to your car, just ask yourself:

"Am I about to lower my car's value?"

Then never mod a car/truck. Those of us that do, do it for ourselves, not to increase resale. I've seen cars/trucks that were built for a couple hundred thousand, make the Great 8 at the Ridler, and then sell for under $100k. I guess that makes them rice?
