Ive also owned an EJ for 6 years, its a '99 25D with 103k and all the proper maintenance. Some days a baby, but other days I drive the everliving piss out of her. Near the 100k maintenance I suspected a minor HG leak but it never caused any issues.

The FD is certainly a top 5 90's car, especially when you recognize the platform survived well into the 2000's.

FD is hands down a better car... owned 2 of them and an FC Turbo. But comparing apples to oranges.

Sounds like I might have gotten a bad egg :P Although, in fairness to the engine, the second time it blew was because the guys at Subaru didn't install the replacement gasket properly

Ex owner of a 93 R1 Championship Yellow Mica FD...Car was a absolute rocket and is very hard to compare to an 86 because its in a different Tier/Class. I would never want to own an rx7 as a daily driver because of gas/maintenance and its rarity (no accidents please) The 86 is more of a drivers car and a fun daily driver that you can take to work everyday and drive to the track or meets or whatever it is you personally like to do. I can honestly say from experience that i enjoy driving the 86 as a daily way more. When my civic broke down and was out of commision for about 3 weeks I daily drove the 7 and it was just a pain in the ass, constant gas stops letting the engine/turbos warm and cool down (no turbo timer) But as a weekend warrior theres not many cars i would rather have then the FD its just a blast and accelerates with no effort at all and the HKS sequential BOV was just pure sex, i never got tired of the sound. I love my FRS and i knew exactly what i was getting into and what the car was built for and its a better car as a daily driver but in no way shape or form an RX7

That sucks

So really, you only blew one head gasket then. Which EJ25 was it, out of curiosity? As I said, I have the 253 in my Outback (SOHC, 173hp 2.5L, 6400rpm redline), and pretty much every time I drive it, I go over 5000rpm several times, and probably over 6000 at least once (though I do keep it under 4k until it's warm, so I don't abuse it too much).

It sounds more impressive if I say that I blew it twice though
I believe it's a EJ255 - Forester X (DOHC, 2.5L, 6400-6500 redline)

The turbo engine then? I've heard that they aren't quite as reliable as the NA EJ25s, but I can't say I have any real data backing that up.

I have a FD, they make awful daily drivers. The ride is very rough and it uses a good amount of gas. But its sexy as hell

I never realized how many of us also own FD's but I am in the same boat.

My FD is fun but not for regular use. The BRZ fills that hole in my heart. =P

If Mazda were to resurrect the FD (no, not the RX-8!) for the price range of the 86, I'd buy it without a second thought! Besides the crazy gas consumption and engine issues, the FD might actually be neck-to-neck with the 86 in performance.

FD is definitely on my list of cars to own someday. I just wish we had access to the post 95 ones or w/e.

Didn't they make them more reliable in late 90's?

They used a larger turbine in one of the turbos and simplified the "rats nest" of vacuum hoses under the upper intake manifold

You're joking, right? The FD was a much more expensive car. It's also much faster, has better suspension design, and overall has more potential. Look at World Time Attack and the Garage Revolution RX7. One of the fastest tuner cars in the world.

Give the 86 double wishbones, and a beefed up turbo version of the FA20, and then things get interesting.
