"Even so, the handling benchmark was the mid-engine Porsche Cayman (which has a 45/55 weight split), and Masuda says the AS1's center of gravity is 17.7 inches high, one inch lower than a Cayman's." Extracted from planet-9.com

"The cars’ similarities are uncanny, right down to their steering wheels and windshield rakes." - Car and Driver

"9. It Had Serious Benchmarks
The primary benchmark for the FR-S was the Porsche Cayman. Other cars — including Honda's S2000 and the Peugeot RCZ — were used earlier in the process. But according to Tada-san it's the Cayman's combination of centralized mass, low center of gravity and linear control feel that he found most compelling and most wanted to emulate. And we see nothing wrong with a car that feels like a Cayman and costs half as much." - Edmunds

"He also confirms the BRZ was benchmarked against the Porsche Cayman R" - Toyota Chairman Katsuaki Watanabe - Autocar article

And the icing on the cake:

"The hugely influential Tada, father of the 86 (and the BRZ, its Subaru near-twin), recognized that the Cayman represented the dynamic and drivetrain target, as well as setting the pace in terms of packaging, weight and a cohesive, driver-oriented cockpit; all the things that matter to enthusiasts. The fact that the Toyota-Subaru alliance also provide the 86 with a normally aspirated, horizontally-opposed engine, like the Cayman... this only confirmed Tada's view that the Porsche's character was close to the personality he projected for the 86...The smallest ever, near-vertical, Toyota steering wheel and stubby gearshift, pedals and dials - (Porsche-like) central tacho redlined at 7400rpm - are flawlessly positioned. All cohesive, functional and, yes Cayman-like..." - wheelmag Australia article

So it seems that despite the plethora of research, evidence, and documentation by automotive professionals, you still deny the similarities and the FACT that Toyota used the Cayman as the benchmark for the ENTIRE PACKAGE. If you still can't see that, despite all of the evidence, you probably shouldn't involve yourself in automotive conversations from here on out. I feel sorry for your school teachers.

To the scholars (definitely not extrashaky): Forgive me for not citing my references in APA 6th Ed format.

So you think the car looks like the Stay Puft Marshmallow man, but not the Cayman, which they used as the benchmark... HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!

BTW... you mentioned my "Elitist" status, and something about not affording a Porsche... Well, I stopped counting when I reached 30+ posts of yours citing your finances, someone else's finances, high school kids, minimum wage employees, etc... Are you a little jealous bro? You've got some issues don't you... Are you seeking a level of success that you just can't seem to attain? Earlier I offered counseling as a joke, but you may actually need it. I feel sorry for you. It's completely clear now that you are the one who in insecure or embarrassed about something.

People like you are why I generally avoid forums except for intelligent technical topics and DIYs.

I should've taken Mark Twain's advice, "Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience."

No. I don't deny that the Cayman was used as a benchmark. I deny that they copied the Cayman, because I actually know what benchmark means. None of the articles you posted indicate that Toyota copied the Cayman, only that they used it as a benchmark for performance and road feel.

A mountain of evidence proves nothing if it isn't actually relevant to the question.

Sorry man, you can't recover from making the stay puft marshmallow man correlation and still argue this. Would you like to pull your foot out of your mouth now?

Every car manufacturer borrows, steals, copies from other manufacturers, whether it is technology, small parts, or entire designs. Ref: Hyundai vs everything for example or the Accord Coupe and the MB C-class coupe. It's called exploiting intelligence. Why are all car manufacturer proving grounds controlled facilities? Why are new cars camouflaged? In an attempt to prevent design and technology theft and hamper intelligence gathering. It is just like Russia, China, and everyone else who copy our military aircraft.

First, I didn't make that comparison. I just found the picture. Second, that was a humor thread. The pic was pretty funny in that context.

I'm beginning to question whether there's something seriously wrong with you.

Good comeback! I think I've seen something similar recently. Oh wait, that's basically what I said to you. So, you aren't creative and can't even recognize a copy when you do it yourself.

Case closed. Conversation over!

So you just admitted that you did not bother reading all of the information presented to you prior to coming to conclusions and making your negative and uniformed statements.

Your mouth must be REALLY full with both feet in it now.

Good day!

I'll have to find the pic of the Maserati and Aston with the 86 below it. It looks like if the first two made sweet love, the 86 would be their illegitimate but beautiful love child.

They certainly did copy some elements from other cars.

Just not the Cayman.
