From Boxster to FR-S

Hello everyone,

I'd like to share my thoughts on moving from Porsche to Scion. Take it with a grain of salt YMMV blah blah blah
..

I owned 2 Boxsters, a 2000 986 2.7L manual and a 1999 986 2.5L. The 2.7 proclaimed 217hp, the 2.5 201hp. The 1999 was the second one I owned, the 2000 suffered a terrible death by Chevy Silverado making a left hand turn in front of me. The difference in HP between the two was hardly noticeable. The handling and acceleration were perfectly adequate, and I loved both of them. Porsche knows how to make eye catching cars and people were constantly assuming I was driving a new one, even though they were both nearly 15 years old. The Porsche crest is instantly recognizable and definitely carries a certain image. But with that image comes cost. Cost for parts are absolutely insane. Squeaks and creaks are abundant and the convertible top MUST be upgraded to glass for maximum pleasure. I did everything to my cars myself, new tops, motor mounts, brakes, you name it because few can be found that will touch a Porsche, even older ones.

I had considered the FRS because I've owned 2 Scions and a Toyota previously. It seemed to check all the right boxes. I finally took the time to test drive one.

WHY DID I WAIT SO LONG!!!!

I traded in the 99 the same day. The FRS offers everything, I mean everything the Boxster offers without the noisy droptop and ridiculous maintenance cost. I have not a single ounce of regret. The warranty and well known Toyota and Subaru reliability are just icing on the cake. I couldn't possibly care less about going from a Porsche badge to a Scion badge. I bought the car for ME, no one else, and I love it. I'm not swapping to Toyota badges either!

For those fellow Porsche owners on the fence, make the move! For those ashamed of driving a Scion, get over it! For those dreaming of a Porsche for their future ride, save some cash or get into one and back out of it again before 40k miles, preferably with a warranty (google IMS failure while you're at it).

Thanks for reading, I'm glad to be an FR-S owner!

It's a budget supercar. The people who think there is something wrong with it are f-ed in the head.

Welcome!

How would you compare the handling in general, and "harshness" of the ride over poor roads?

The Boxster handles equally well, feeling only slightly less "tail happy" when compared to the FR-S. The ride quality is at parity, with the Boxster being noisier because of the soft top.

I recently owned a 2009 Boxster S (987.2) for a short while and was thinking about starting a similar thread. In short, I reached the same conclusion as you. The Boxster S was a fantastic car and I'll buy another one someday. But the weird thing is that owning a Boxster S made me appreciate how fantastic the FR-S is for the price.

I wasn't expecting to like the FR-S more after owning the Boxster S, but somehow it happened. Can't explain it.

Here was mine:

I prefer the Scion badges to the Toyota not that I hate Toyota's emblem design I just like the futuristic sound of "scion" lol

The newest Boxter 2013+ is incredibly sexy. Looks better than the 911 I reckon.

Would love to own a 2014+ Cayman S one day. Too bad they're way overpriced in Australia. 140k... pfft I'll stick with the 30k Toyota 86 for now.

I went from a '99 996 Cabriolet to the 2014 FR-S and there are no regrets! ;-)
