Mine did that once or twice in the past. Just keep your oil changed on time, make sure your radiator coolant is up to par, and hope it doesn't become an issue. The cars are still new so we don't have all the known issues recorded. If it's going to fail, it's going to fail. I got the 7 year, 100,000 mile warranty on mine, but I wouldn't be surprised if they take care of folks with complete engine failures outside of the 25,000 mile warranties. Don't get paranoid though! Keep faith that mine was an edge case, and the motors are generally sound.

What warranty is this? The basic warranty (bumper to bumper) is 36,000 miles or 3 years.

The powertrain (engine, transmission) is 5 years or 60k miles.

Mine has about 39000, identical specs minus the accident. Hope yours gets resolved quickly but this is definitely a concern for higher mileage 86's.

Also I also had a weird metallic noise in 2nd gear around 3500rpms. Never heard the noise before and it wasn't the normal gear shift rattle either. Sounded like it came from the engine bay too.

Oil was changed within the last week by the dealer. Never saw any oil under the car. No noises. Car ran great and purred like a kitten. No warning. No smoke. Clean as a whistle. All service performed in the schedule. No big water puddles lately in this desert :-)

At least if the dealer fucked up the oil change, they have no one to blame for it but themselves.

My experience with Subies is they don't particularly like any kind of front end collision regardless of the amount of force because the crank pulley seems to get issues very easily. I've seen several come into the shop with issues related to the crank pulley.

I'll go on record stating you cannot incur $14,000.00 in damage to a lightweight / small / relatively inexpensive vehicle without affecting anything mechanical. Electronics affected can affect the engine and transmission.

Over 1/2 the price of a new vehicle is "major."

A pickup truck reversed about 10 feet in front of me and damaged the hood, fenders, headlamps, bumper cover, bumper, A/C condenser, fuse block, among other things. A significant portion of the cost was replacing the entire engine harness because the fuse block is sold only together with the harness. I can check the estimate paperwork later to give you more indication. By the way, there is nothing inexpensive about repairing any vehicle regardless of cost especially when you consider labor.

Thanks for the info. I thought I read somewhere on Scion's website that the car came with a 25,000 mile warranty. That might have been a maintenance warranty instead.

Regardless, right now we can just hope that the dealership plays nice and replaces it. Good luck OP!
I hear you on the hail damage. Had two separate insurance claims last summer for hail damage for hail that was dime-sized. I used to love thunderstorms, now I dread them if my car is outside

OP, I hope its nothing major. Seeing posts like this always make me nervous.

Even the owners manual says to expect some detonation with 91 Octane (which I always thought was bullshit).

Again, I shut it down as soon as I determined there was a problem. That's all anyone can do. Your comments have added no value here.
