"clacking" noise near tranny area?
Well guys my frs out of no where one evening on the way home started making a wierd noise like a clacking sound. The thing is u can on hear it at idle and car in nuetral no clutch pedal pressed in. When u press it in sounds gone. Out, there it is...so on and so on.. really wierd. So I got under the car when the noise was occuring and it seemed to be coming from the tranny. Might be throw out bearing (IMO)... doesnt ever affect the operations of the vehicle. What really threw me for a loop is when I have the ac on, car at idle, and in nuetral noise will occur. Loud clack. Soon as I cut the a/c off noise goes away? Im lost on this one. Took to dealer. They were telling me a fuel pump issue nd I really dont think that could be the issue. Im debating on letting them mess with my fuel. I live in Tyler TX area and these guys don't seem to bright to me.. any ideas on what Ishould do.. oh yeah I have 32k miles and warranty is still in affect for a few more thousand miles. Any feedback would be greatly appreciate!.. if needed will try and post vids of noise soon as it stops raining.

Probably clutch/flywheel rattle. The idle speed is different depending on if the A/C is on or off, this would likely change the amplitude of the vibration explaining why it's more noticeable with one or the other. If you push the clutch in the noise goes away correct? |

When the throwout bearing is wearing, it will sound like a "whirrrring" noise (ask me how I know). If that's what you're getting, even faintly but audibly (even if it can't be heard outside the car, but only in cabin), get it looked at pronto. When that throwout bearing goes, you lose the clutch control entirely, and your clutch will eat itself on the flywheel, and sustained driving with that condition will do damage to the input shaft on the transmission if you don't quickly stop driving and get the car towed to where the clutch assembly can be replaced. Again, ask me how I know.

How u know? Lol but na its not a whirring I can hear it inside and outside. with clutch in no noise, clutch out there's the clacking? I'm lost. the dealer is telling me fuel pump issue? That just doesn't sound reasonable to me. Last edited by QckFR-S; 05-08-2014 at 06:39 PM. |

B/c I had it happen in my 08 WRX back in November of 2012. I ignored the sound, thinking it wasn't serious, just the normal sounds the car makes after a while. That is, until it went out of me while I was decelerating on a freeway offramp.

Well I know it aint normal at all. But it doesnt affect the drive ability of the car. Its a noise in the tranny im for sure of it. But the dealer isnt on the same page as me telling me its a fuel related issue..come on now. Now the damn clutch is squeaking during pressing and releasing it. I feel like shit cause the dealer is being gaaaaay I feel like cause im young they arent doin me right

So, insist that it's coming from the transmission and that they examine that area. You're the customer. You bought the car. It belongs to you and you have a service agreement that YOU paid for. If they're just going to ignore you, then they aren't living up to the contract. Act your position: the one who calls the shots on your car.

I guess the key here is how loud is it? If it's something a random oblivious passenger notices then yes, dealership time, if you have to pause and listen for it I'd say normal.
I missed the 'loud' in my initial response, hope things work out. |
