It's what corporate america calls it these days. Something they can repackage and resell to the mass media(and brainwash them), through new artists (usually newer, money hungry, untalented artists; and almost never the real originators, whom were the true, passionate, pioneers). It's a general term used by corporations and mainstream-media for the past couple years, for just about all electronic music (even though majority of music nowadays are made with electronic equipment), so they can put it easily and neatly put it in a box, pigeonhole it, and pump/gain millions of dollars into and from it. It's a term they created to be commercial friendly and sold easily to the masses....with total and complete disregard and zero respect of the history.

Even only 5 or so years ago, that term was never commonly used - it was still respectfully called and known as house, trance, jungle/d&b, etc., with their respective known artists and contributors. Additionally, hip hop, 80s new wave, some funk from the 60s-70s, even classic rock bands and experimental..all heavily used electronic instruments and synths.. but no one ever called it "edm"

You're right, people didn't call it "EDM." It was "electronica" and for the most part up through the 90s, when it became more and more mainstream and more music adopted electronic styles, that's how it stayed. And now there are new genres of electronic music that I haven't even heard of that probably didn't exist a few months ago. :P

So what's more understandable?
"What kind of music do you listen do?"
"Electronic dance music"
versus
"glitch-hop, liquid dnb, chillstep, cosmic, chiptunes, ambient, goa-psy..." At what point do you just stop when the other person's eyes glaze over?

Kinda like rock. Rock is a lot of things, all-encompassing in a plethora of musical subcategories.
