It's what corporate america calls it these days. Something they can repackage and resell to the mass media, through new artists (usually newer, money hungry, untalented artists; and almost never the real originators, whom were the true, passionate, pioneers). Yea the term just until recently blew up. I always went by genre ie house, trance, techno, dubstep etc. but honestly you're looking way too much into it. I think it's just a simple way to refer to the music as a whole, with it being so complex to the normal person. Electronic dance music, which essentially that's what all the genre and sub genres really are.
