I like how narrow-minded you guys are..NOT!! @tahdizzle I get it,man, your from Fresno. I grew up there too.. I live in Phoenix most days now, & let me tell you a little something about our other friend heat. Turning your car off for even 3 minutes to run inside & get the fucking mail will result in 130 degree car temps. no thank U! Glad I found this thread for a couple reasons..
1. I didnt know I had a tiny key inside my fob..lol
2. Now I dont have to worry about some1 jacking my car when I run inside the QT for a suicide slushie.
3. I again realized how hard it is to get useful information from an internet forum despite most of us having signed up to get exactly that.
4. Even if no information was provided, it was completely worth it for the OP's reply to the moronic questions of why with regards to Panama?.

I love the hate for such a legitimate question....

This feature would be useful for me because I sometimes grab an energy drink or breakfast at the gas station down the street on my way to work. Rather than turning my cold engine off and having to start it again, I could just simply lock my car as I went into the gas station without the fear of a warm and comfy bum jacking my car. Is that too much to ask?

Sorry to revive an old topic but I find it odd that no one ever considered the need to keep a car running after a jump start ...who wants to risk needing another jump? Did you even bring another car along in case you’d need it? Probably not. You can’t always have the luxury to drive around for half an hour to ensure you’ve generated enough cranking amps

Not really the answer you were looking for, but if that is a concern, pick up one of these, and make sure to check the battery level once per month.



There are hundreds to choose from, but the above pictured is only $10 more than a typical set of jumper cables, and is good for up to a 2.5 liter engine. The Anker one I have only needs charged about once every six months (if not regularly used) and is small enough to fit in the glove box.

The wires to the electric trunk release are accessible from under the back of the car. For you thieves with an IQ higher than room temperature, just get a battery with some jumper wires and bed-of-nails test clips to connect and you are in quick. Big fail.

What makes you think that would work? The electronic trunk release goes through the inside of the trunk in a wiring loom check page 42:

The only wires under the back of the car are for the reverse light and further is the rear antenna for the key fobs. Alligator clip trickery isn't going to work there

Have you considered that a bum or any nefarious person for that matter might not care that the car is locked? If they wanted the ride they can break the window hop in and drive away, no? I have no experience with these electronic keys, so i don't know how far they would get, but by that time the damage is done.

I have no issues with the OG's question, but personally I like to provide the least temptation to others. this means car OFF, locked and no visible valuables at all times. never the less, even though I can't relate to the cold weather points I'm interested in the solutions on this thread and the challenges people encounter up north.

I've always locked my car after starting it...granted mines a BMW system and its an automatic transmission and it may just have that ability that the twins apparently lacks.

Doesn't seem all that uncommon though, I did find some older posts in other forums for the exact same thing. Maybe newer systems allow locking with the engine running while older systems didn't.

You could try putting the fob right at the window and pressing the lock button and see if that does anything...…

other than that, best practice would be just to turn it off and turn it on when required no matter how short a period between off and start is. Its what I do.
I never want the car to be unlocked at any time so I've conditioned myself to do that. Theres a handful of times I do a quick errand and leave the car unlocked but it makes me worry lol.

apparently you can take off without the fob until the car is shut off (in which case you obviously cant start it again). Seems Flawed to me (safety as well, having the car shut off in the middle of driving would lead to a dangerous situation) , I always thought the car needed the fob within proximity to go...bt apparently not. Would be easy I think with an automatic, have it not allow you to shift out of park or something. With a manual might be a bit more tricky....lock out the clutch or something?

That's more complex and requires the car to be actively connecting with the fob to find its location more than it already does, and would have issues if the battery on the fob dies more often then not.

Car manufacturers consider the electronic code transmitted from the key-fob to the starting system the digital equivalent of a physical key, so the "removal" of the "key" occurs when the driver presses the button to shut off the car and the code is cleared from the starting system. This would make it trivially easy to violate the regulation if the car cleared the start code as soon as the key fob was too far away, as it would allow a situation where the "key" can be "removed" before the car is put into park. So to skirt around that regulation, the car simply remains running so the car makers can argue that the "key" cannot be "removed" before the car is put into park. As an aside here, you could argue that it still violates the regulation, as many cars with push button start/stop will stop without the transmission being set to the "park" position when the start/stop button is pressed.


It looks like the last time CFR 571.114 was updated was in 2010, and it hasn't really kept up with this technology. There's a lot of grey area, lawsuits, and it'll probably be a few years before the law and technology fully mature here.


If the car engine stopped when the key-fob is moved too far away, then the car mfg would have to implement a system that physically prevents the driver from removing the key-fob from the car unless the system is in park to stay in compliance with the regulation. This would pretty much defeat the "key-less" point, as the best way to "lock" the key-fob in the car while it's running would be to just have a key on it and use a traditional key-based ignition. So in a sense, this behavior is a "desired" interpretation of the regs because it the car mfg doesn't have to kill a desirable selling point for their vehicle.
There is a safety aspect that can be considered, in the event that the key-fob is unexpectedly removed from the vehicle while driving (e.g.: child tosses it out the window), however this isn't something that's currently addressed in the regulations. It's possible that auto makers have looked into this already and found that a vehicle with a key-less ignition that continues running regardless of the proximity of the key-fob is safe, though reports of people leaving their vehicles running by mistake would indicate otherwise. At this point I've wandered into the realm of speculation, so I'll stop here.
