The new MQB chassis has really shaved a lot of weight, and the oil pan is plastic. Don't forget there's also something called the Mk3 Audi TT with the same Haldex system.

Until the VII hits the US, it's hard to care. We're talking next year.

MKVII GTI is due here in June (although you are right about the R). I don't care until the Performance Pack variants arrive though. A 5-dr GTI with e-LSD and DCC suspension is VERY interesting compared to the Golf R; a few reviews have suggested that the PP/DCC-equipped GTIs are actually quicker around a track than the R.

As someone who would love to see the R400 built, for what they'll probably ask price-wise I'd rather have a Vette.

Not sure if they'll ever produce the R400 —and if they do, may not come stateside—, but the next Audi TT RS should be a monster

Its a tough call. Another auto enthusiast site had a thread about the R400 and people are ranging it from 55,000-65,000 CDN. At 55,000 you can pretty much get a bare-bone Stingray which gets pretty much the same hwy mileage as the 86 according to our trusty government agency! The Chevrolet website currently has a pretty good rundown on the now aluminum chassis. I recall a high mileage C5 hardtop coupe a while ago with a pretty good asking price years and years ago..

some of you peeps really make me raise an eyebrow

performance per dollar is one thing.

sure you can buy a Corvette and rip it like a madman

but then you'd be in a corvette, with the associated image, and very limited cargo space.

a 400hp Golf on the other hand means that no one's gonna be trying to race you, tail gate you, cut you off, etc in an attempt to rustle your jimmies... all the while being able to pack your entire family in it (i owned an Mk4 golf) along with camping gear, bikes and tow a boat while you're at it.

entirely different things

Me worry about Corvette image? I already drive an Abarth. This thing screams "LOOK AT ME" more than every other car I've owned, combined. If other people want to race, etc, fine. They can make a fool out of themselves all they want. Already owned a fast, loud Mustang. Already been through that and outgrew it.

I have a Camry if I want to haul family around. Maybe that's not every person's situation, but I don't need two practical appliances. If I wanted to haul all that other stuff I'd go buy a Jeep.

edit: Secondly, the VW dealership nearest is run by an asshole who was a **** to my wife and I when they crashed my car while it was in for warranty work on a "test drive" after they told me I could come pick it up.

I dunno about this. I understand your reasoning, but even in my GTI, I still get people trying to race me. I imagine it'd be worse in a Golf R.

Maybe if you re-badged it as a 2.5 Golf.

I make a habit of not passing cars that are significantly faster than mine.
The cargo space isn't bad at all.. I didn't want to touch the "sold" corvette on display out of respect but the salesman told me the owner was a hockey player and could fit all his equipment in the back. A bit of a turn off though as he said he didn't think it was a good idea to swap snow tires for the winter. If one finds a spouse, I don't see why it be so hard to borrow her(he is possible these days..) vehicle that's somewhat off-road-able. The C6 Bomex? Corvette did very well in recent Japanese racing series. Don't see why there would be any negative image for an enthusiast. They are different cars but still practical enough for a split chop decision.

Well, if he's not handicapped, and he's parking in a handicapped zone, he's clearly handicapped...

This thread blew-up yesterday!

Anywho... I know the Golf is common, and the GTI is the known performance version, but it got a bit tiring correcting people who were complimenting my 'nice GTI'. Then watching most of them go blank when I told them it was the AWD R. However the (few) others I met that had any kind of R or R32 were generally great to chat with.

After getting my FR-S I chatted w/a guy who was trying to sell his modified Mk 4 R32. He shared the sentiment that it was too much car to live a docile life as a DD.

It's funny, a Golf R is why I bought a FRS. I drove my friend's APR'd out Golf R and missed having fun driving. It sent me on a search for a new car that lead to the FRS.
