I picked up my kit from UPS today but probably won't have it installed for a bit. There isn't much to it though, it's just pipes and a turbo.
Much the same as any other kit.

I'm sooo on the fence about this. JDL has some great rep on this forum and I live in the Phoenix area so it makes sense to run their twin scroll kit and keep it local. At the same time I've been preppped and ready to run the Ptuning kit for about 4 months now and I'm having a difficult time deciding.

It's really not much you are cutting, it's not like it's a big structural part of the beam. I'm expecting with my cutoff wheel for it to take about 2 minutes.

I don't know if they ever posted but I think they now have alternative route piping. Personally I am cutting.

Actually even a small cut to the square hollow section would significantly weaken it, they use hollow sections in areas like that because of its large second moment of area for the relatively little amount of weight it has. This makes the beam very stiff and allows it to transfer energy. Removing material from the back will remove valuable material from the tension zone in the event of a collision. That being said I'd still take the cut path, short piping is more important to me personally and id try and reinforce it around the piping as best as possible

It's 2 very small cuts as you can see on JDL's classified section thread. Being a hollow beam if it really bothers you why not just weld back in some metal plates leaving enough room for the pipework.

honestly I wouldn't worry too much about cutting it. Still interested to see numbers and real world driving would work for you

Define fast spool? I would say yes most likely as long as an appropriate sized turbo is used. Twin scrill is used on low compression engines using large turbines. A GTX2867R with even a medium sized housing and a free flowing exhaust is known to spool low boost at very low RPM in as little as 200ms to 600ms on this platform. And even faster at higher RPM. Also you need very little boost to reach most peoples target power. RPM wise they will spool anywhere from 2,400-3,400RPM depending on exhaust, turbine, and tune. Basically what people are desiring from twin scroll you can get from a turbo that can produce fair boost on this engine with a single scroll. I would personally rather put the $$ into a 3" exhaust than twin scroll. The highly doubt the difference would be significant enough that most people would notice it unless you were running a turbine that was large enough for 600+ HP. Mind you I haven't driven a twin scroll on this setup but even the owner of JDL went from having a twin scroll on his own car and is moving on to using a single.

There are more than one 'danger' that your engine faces based on load and RPM. Its true that knock is more likely to happen at high load, near peak torque - but that doesnt mean you are home free after you are past that point. An engine will face twice the internal stresses operating at 8000rpm than at 7000, for example. I would absolutely taper off boost if I was to do an endurance event. D |
