Got the new issue of Autoweek in the other day. Z/28 vs a 911 GT3. Summary: For the track, Z/28. For a street car, GT3.

Autoweek tested it against the Porsche GT3 with Andy Pilgrim driving both back to back at Barber. Excerpt:

"Our test car had A/C and a six speaker sound system, bringing it to 3851 pounds... It's extremely stable and predictable at the limit... the balance, mechanical grip and chassis setup let you carry good mid-corner speeds. It's sticking; recovery is good and it doesn't feel like a 3800 pound car...

Simply put, less mechanical grip and the need for more rear downforce in the GT3 equals more sliding and longer slide recovery times, and this would be more uncomfortable for the average track day warriors... I can say it's easier for me to go fast in the Z/28, and if I owned one, I'd sure go looking for GT3's to play with at any track day... if both of these are in my garage, it would be GT3 for the street and Z/28 for the track, every time...

“I've driven tons of street cars modified for the track. You couldn't come close to one this capable for the price. If you have $75K … this is your boy right here.”

Lap times:

Z/28 = 1:36:29
GT3 = 1:35:76

A bit ironic, given that the GT3 was .5 sec faster around the track... but it was more work.

Personal preference I suppose. According to the author, the GT3 needs more grip and downforce, and the Z/28 was easier to drive at the limit. Rings pretty close to home here, that the most fun car at the track isn't always the fastest.

I see it in MX bike shootout/reviews all the time. Test riders seem to consistently pick the bike that they aren't the fastest on. Which, if you're out to have a good time, is the correct choice. But if you're actually racing, it doesn't make any sense at all.

Which is why I find it a bit ironic... Andy Pilgrim IS a racer.

Yeah it's interesting how so many people seem to think that the better track car is always the faster track car. Maybe if you're using your car to do w2w racing or time-trials, but I think for most people who just do HPDE or the like, the best track cars are:

1) Fun
2) Reliable
3) Cheap

Speed isn't really a factor unless you're the kind of person where, to have fun, you absolutely cannot give a point-by.

Actually come to think of it, I've seen plenty of those types on the track.

A base 2014 Carrera with no options is about 3050lbs. Add bigger wheels, fancy suspension, a PDK transmission, and all that fun stuff to get the weight up.

Going through through the options is just a joke. You don't even get an LSD with a base 911. Gotta upgrade for 1500. I don't think I'll ever get a new Porsche just because the pricing is so fucking insulting.

The first new Z/28 available for sale to the public was auctioned off this afternoon at Barrett-Jackson Palm Beach. It was a charity auction with the proceeds going to AARP's Fight to End Hunger. Car went for........$500,000.00. Was purchased by Flynn Auto Group out of Ohio. It was triple black with black wheels.

Hennessey Extracts 1145HP From A Camaro ZL1… At The Wheels!

Quote:
If you want your Camaro ZL1 to really reach stratospheric levels of power, then Hennessey is the place to visit.

The Texan builder released a short video footage of a Camaro ZL1 strapped onto their dyno, just after they’ve done playing with its engine.

Hennessey took the 580hp Camaro to town, ditching its supercharger for a pair of turbos as they installed the so-called HPE1200 upgrade in it. That’s right; the number represents how many horses are now unleashed from the 6.2-litre V8.

After the - now twin-turbo - Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 had some race fuel for breakfast and crank the boost up to 20psi, the dyno showed an astonishing 1145hp at the wheels. At-the-wheels. Let that sink in for a bit.

If power corrupts, then Hennessey is our kind of politician.
