Insurance nuances/freebies

Just a heads up to anyone who picks up a stone chip on the windshield:

I just got mine fixed at Apple Autoglass.
Initially, I thought I would have to pay for it because my comprehensive coverage deductible is $1,000.
I had called my insurer (TD Meloche Monnex) the day before, and they had told me the same (that I would have to pay out of pocket).

Lo and behold, when I took it to Apple (I went to the Leaside location - fantastic service and very knowledgeable staff), the rep asked me why I wasn't claiming it through my insurer.
When I responded that I'd been told it would be out of pocket, the guy (whose name was Phillip) told me that most insurers would cover windshield repairs as a courtesy, and expected TD to be the same.
Lo and behold, he calls them up for me, and the TD now tells me that because it was a repair and not a replacement, they would pay the costs as a courtesy.

On the off chance that anyone gets a stone chip to the windscreen while driving our pristine Canadian/Toronto roads, keep this knowledge handy - it saved me ~$100 for a quality windshield repair (I can't even see any hint of the crack at all). Of course, YMMV depending on your insurer and the type of damage.

Any other nice insurance courtesies out there?

Yep This isn't new news, Insurance would rather pay 100 to fix your windshield than 1000 to replace it.

Lucky you went to a good Apple Autoglass. The Apple Autoglass on Doncaster Road is probably the worst place ever and f*ed up both my OEM Sekurit windshield install and my power lumber seat warranty repair when I had my new Golf GTI.

The one at Leaside has very good reviews (and I can see why).
Leave your car there and go next door to Tim Hortons or Longos.
