I know squat about "tuning" and don't really plan of goofing with this car, but I would like to have some understanding of what you guys are talking about.

Think easily sourced/cheap race gas.. about 95-100 octane depending on who you ask.

As far as strong feelings about ethanol go, like yourself I prefer mine with malted hops and barley.

Higher octane. Better cooling properties. And typically cheaper than 91. (Burns quicker but balances out). Basically more power and less heat. This does rewire a tune though. Putting e85 in without tuning we cause an issue.

And Lawrence turn off your rear o2 compensation. Just zero the values out.

Ahh, I was wondering. My limited knowledge of E85 is that it's better for the environment, but less efficient that gas, thus lower MPG overall. I didn't know it had a higher octane.

Having been an avid homebrewer since 1997, I'm all about the alcohol.

E85 is as stated basically cheaper race gas but it requires more fuel to obtain the same effects as gas. The reason it's useful in these engines is because of the high compression which on 91 means that power is left on the table due to basically crappy gas.

Turbo Cars also like it as the cool effect and higher octane allow more timing, basically it allows more timing no mater what the difference being that with NA you can pass MBT (Means Base Timing, this means basically you can pass the point where adding more timing increases performance and it starts to decrease, basically) where as with E85 and FI (Turbo or Supercharger) you will blow the motor before you reach MBT.

FFS = Flat Foot Shifting
LC = Launch Control
Tune = What we call the information stored in the PCM/ECU for the car that tells it how to run basically.

Thanks Cross. I want to continue to learn about this stuff. I'm a good wrench but not a tuner. I've done everything short of a complete rebuild on my 20 year old Landcruiser. Being an old Landcruiser guy, I come from the school of thought of reliability/longevity over performance. The Landcruiser is a pig even if you dress it up. 4.5l straight 6, CI block with alum head. My rig weighs 6500# before I load up for a trip.
Everything I've done to it is about longevity. I stick with stock air filters because they do a better job at filtering silicates(dust and dirt) than any of the hi flow stuff. I send out oil samples to Blackstone Labs every year. 185k miles and she runs like new. 7k oil changes on dyno oil Chevron Delo 400 15w40. Yearly diff oil and transfer case oil changes. I've built most of my suspension components. I've overbuilt the battery connectors with 0g wire, running dual batteries, regeared the diffs to 4.88, etc. The only performance mod I've done to it is mill .0001 off the head when I changed the head gasket and I bored out the cats and went to 2-1/2" exhaust. All of which probably bought me 10hp and a couple #of torque, which means **** on a 6500# vehicle. It's a low end beast anyway. I wouldn't do it that way again.

So, I love this car and enjoy the hell out of driving it, but anything I do to it will (more than likely) be about longevity and reliablilty, keeping it clean and stock like my dad did to his old GTO's back in the day. Time will tell, of course. What I am looking forward to is some road course type driving.

You guys didn't tell me I would have Evo's wanting to race me once I installed UELs. @BugeyedWagon, tell your friends I didn't actually swap in a WRX STI motor, it just sounds like it. :p

I would say we seem to share a few view points. My Vette was over built for the very reason of being able to do anything I wanted with it although in the end it turned in me wanting an FD RX7 with a similar build instead of the Vette.
Iron block for the added strength, Forged Components, all ARP Bolts, Built Diff, EOS Trans Diff Brace among much more.

You shouldn't be worried about reliability and bolt ons or E85 with this car. It will just make it more enjoyable but either way I hope you enjoy it. However with a 12.5:1 compression ratio this motor was meant for better gas and E85 is a good way to get there as is race gas but well at 8+ a gallon for race gas... I choose E85

Here's the motor in the Cruiser. 9:1 compression, stock. I milled off 10 thousandths on the head about 7 years ago. 1FZ-FE

and can someone tell me WTF is going on with E85 prices lately? Filled up today and it was only 10 cents less than 91 when it is normally over 50 cents less.

So who has a painter suggestion in Tucson; some low-life decided they needed to carve a 3' X in my hood tonight.. Either at Tucson Speedway or a food truck roundup, not sure where it happened.. No buff out here, it's down to the primer. Kinda' killed the fun Saturday night buzz.
