For me at stock power, I'd like 17x8 +35 to +42, with a decent face that isn't convex or flat. The trouble's of 17x8 I tell you...What I hate is when you look at wheels online and they always show the 9" face with the beautiful concave face or lips. Then when you look at installed photos the spokes are always worse.

Colour wise, I'd like a gun metal finish to go with SWP/Whiteout

This, but I would consider going to 7.5"-8" width

The problem is the 8 inch wheel should be using a 235/40/17 tire, which is super rare (pretty much only extreme class). a 225/45 is a bit too tall and stretched.

A 7 inch wheel lets you stay in stock class, run a 215/45 at proper size, and you can use a Star Spec or a PSS for dirt cheap compared to a 245/40.

I bought an 8 inch wheel because I liked the look but in hind sight I'd either go 9 inch if I wanted super wide 245/255s or 7 inch for 215s. 8 inch if you like mild/mod stretch and a bit slower gearing.

What class are you running in?

On a really wide 225 tire, 9" works as the maximum limit. With that said, 225 on an 8" is perfectly fine. It appears a lot of people want that ability to run a 225 or a 245 tire on a 8.5" wheel without too much stretch or too much bulge.

Exactly and an offset that can run some camber on stock strut without rubbing.

Not on the list, but for style, I'd really love a mesh style wheel, but not with too many spokes. Something like the Enkei Raijin.
Actually I'd like to change this to a 7" width after doing a lot of looking around. Everything else can stay the same, but finding a good 7" wide wheel is difficult.

And this is the reason why. I play with wheel/tire calculator a lot and I've noticed there's no 'perfect' tire size to fit a 17x8 wheel. A 235/40 would be perfect, but they just don't make them. A 245/40 fits, but I might as well get a 9" wide wheel for a tire that wide. All this costs money. A 17x7 is lighter, cheaper, and lets you use the 215/45, which is a cheap size for a tire. I'd love a good one, but I just can't find one I like.

From what I've gathered
Stock power / Track
17x8
35-45mm offset
225 tires

What I'll probably end up with
18x9.5
38mm offset
245 tire

There is no 225 tire that matches factory diameter perfectly.

225/45 is too tall, even if you stretch it. And before anyone says "it's just 3%" go take 6hp and toss it out the window. People pay 1000+ for exhaust to gain 6hp. AND it raises your car almost 1/2 an inch. We're supposed to be dropping cars ~1 inch for improved handling...

The point is 8 inch wheels are a dime a dozen. A 215 PSS or RE11a works on it - I've still got the stock 215 Primacys on my 8 inch OZ (and I hate the look). But to fill a gap in the market place, would be light 7 inch wide wheels in clean spoked style, like BBS RC, Superleggerras - Anything to give a choice over RPF1s or Kosei's (which are 17x7!).

What driving application are you looking for? That's really the goal in which you modify your car to.

We've used the following 17" setups on this platform for snow, daily, spirited, and track:
215 on 17x7 and 17x8
225 on 17x7, 17x8, and 17x9
235 on 17x8, 17x8.5, and 17x9
245 on 17x8, 17x8.5, 17x9, and 17x9.5
255 on 17x9 and 17x9.5

18x8.5+45 front
18x8.5+38 rear
225/40s or 245/35s all around, without having to run spacers in the back to fill out the wheel well.

Bronze or SBC (DGM BRZ)

I have a problem with my new setup
Some told me this will be tight, and most told me this wont rub, hence I went with:
SSR 18x8.5 49+ offset
Toyo R1R 245/40/18 (should have gotten 245/35)
I went with this size as I really wanted the sticky Toyos, and a taller sidewall is nice as it protects the wheels from damage or bends. This is a track setup I'm going for.
The car is sitting fairly low on KW clubsports and IT RUBS at full lock. Went over some bumps and its not hitting the wheel well.
If I raise it, will it prevent some of that rubing at full lock? I cannot return the tires, so what are my options at this point?
