You have to spray it full on onto anywhere that isn't masked (lights and whatnot) for it to peel off easily and anywhere you can mask off will save you dip in the long run.
...and that's part of the beauty of PD. Yes, you will save some PD by masking everything off fully, but it only take 3-4 gallons to cover an entire car with 5-6 coats (less for a motorcycle, more for a truck, etc). In the end, you may prefer to peel off PD after the spraying instead of masking beforehand. Depending on your skill at either it could be a significant trade-off in time spent. The entire kit, including the HVLP sprayer, is available from DipYourCar.com for a few hundred bucks but I'm looking for a local shop because California doesn't allow for the sale of high VOC paints in large quantities (gallons and up). With all the new pearls, microflakes, metalizers and glossifiers that are available, I'm eventually going to do my work truck and my brother's old Civic as well rather than have them painted.

I am planning on doing this, just need to decide on a color.

Any specific colors from dipyourcar anyone wants me to experiment with?
I've painted cars before with HVLP guns so I'm really just stuck on which color would look best on an FRS.....

Something that can't be had from the factory but the only problem is, if your car isn't black to start out with, door jambs/inside trunk/inside hood may be a bit of a mismatch and may dictate your possible options.

Barring that, yellow with baller gold microflake clear/gloss over it gets my vote for bright and eye catching. Heck, with the right factory color it might be a nice contrast.

My old wrx was dipped white. Looks incredible every time you wash it, but definitely shows the dirt. If you're going for more of a show car and don't mind frequent power-washes, there's no better looking color. Pics just don't do it justice, it's MUCH brighter than any white paint. I wonder if you could opticoat plastidip to make it permanent? Hmm....

Still debating on doing my entire car. Seen the videos and final products done and it looks killer. It's an amazing protectant in the winter as well and can be easily taken off.

Issues with doing any sort of opticoat/clearcoat over the top basically harden into the plasti dip and makes it 100x harder to take off. Dip Your Car has done videos of clear coat, and while it does still come off, it changes the "stretchy" properties of the dip making the easy removal much more of a headache.

Couple things potential dippers should be careful of:

1. Gasoline will stain and destroy it. My old wrx had an issue with the evap canister than sometimes caused the gas dispenser at gas stations not to click off. You have to be really careful every time you fill your car up not to drip any on the dip itself. That being said, if you let it eat through the dip and respray a few coats on top after about a week, you can cover it up well enough that you can't tell unless you're looking for the cover-up. Wish real touch up paint was that easy!

2. Door jams are a big problem. If you do them, you're going to have to cover up the interior of your car and spray at funny angles to get the jams properly coated. If you don't do them, you'll get overspray in the door jams that'll take you YEARS to remove. The kid I sold my wrx to peeled off the dip and still has white dots all over the door jams. Problem 1 may actually be a solution to problem 2, but I have no evidence that this is true.

3. If you go white, you'll need way more than 5 coats. Probably closer to 10-12. Took the guys who did mine 2 of the metal containers (can't remember if they're 1 gal or 5 gal off the top of my head).

4. Don't even try to rattle can the car. It'll streak like crazy and come out horribly. Yes, people on the internet have done it to their 30 year old pick ups. Please don't do it to your 86 unless you have a LOT of experience.

5. If you don't mask off areas that you want to remove (any black trim, windows, etc), it's a huge pain to get a nice sharp edge without peeling up the dip.

6. If you have any rust at all, the plastidip will turn a nasty brown color. Even a tiny amount of rust will result in a big spot that you can't just plastidip over.

7. You can and should wax over it if you plan on keeping it for any amount of time. Spray wax is your friend here, since you really want to avoid rubbing the surface as much as possible.

8. You can go through non-touchless car washes. I did several times. Once it cures, that stuff is really tough!

9. Your car will smell like plastidip for several weeks, especially if garaged at night.

10. You will learn to love simple green. Makes clean-up very easy. Also, get a dip washer from dipyourcar.com. It will save you lots of headaches as far as detailing goes.

11. All of the dark colors look horrible in person

12. If spraying wheels, mask off your tires. Don't even think twice about it, just do it. The overspray is a HUGE pita to remove from tires.

Most people like to get rid of the wheel gap. It looks like you've added 5 more inches of wheel gap to the rear.

It looks way better in person, especially with the glossifier I did today. The wheel gap that is there shouldn't be there for long

I'm just teasing. Black is very hard to appreciate in pictures. Can't wait to see the results!

I helped my friend plasti dip his bumper after a little incident (you can read about that here http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1604603)

This was the outcome.

We did it as a last second decision. Went and picked up two cans of plastidip and it came out really well.

Those DYC photos and that caddy.....hnnnnng.

I've dipped a lot of stuff with rattle cans, but I'm debating taking the plunge one day for an actual spray job. I've got my compressor and hose, but a bit concerned about color choice.

On Whiteout/SWP/37J, does the dip remove the clear and/or pearl when removed? Does it ever stain the paint? I saw some horror story where a guy had painted the Superman S logo on his hood, and it stained his white hood permanently.

Kinda thinking either battleship grey (matte) or one of the baller neon colors like blue/green/orange. Again, just afraid of permanent stains/tinting.

I read the same article and while it did leave a ghost image of the "S", upon leaving it in the sun for a week or two it was completely gone. It didn't affect the clear coat or paint at all. It's a very rare thing and the couple times it has came up, was on factory white paint.
