The naca scoop will direct air into the engine bay, the side vents pull air out. Without the naca scoop you wont have a circular air venting system and you'll just have to rely on heat rising out the vents.

I remember reading something about making any kind of scoop would disrupt the flow of air going through the radiator and that having vents alone are more effective at keeping the air flowing through the radiator and out the vents? Or maybe that was speculation and there isn't that big of a difference.

I replaces my BRZ faux vents with the Prova real ones. I had a body shop do the work. It looks completely stock unless you are a twins owner and know what you are looking at. All it took was cutting a hole and then sealing the newly exposed metal with primer. The Prova replacement part took a bit of sanding on the backside too to get a factory looking fit. As to how much heat does it evacuate? I did not do a before and after on engine bay temps so could not really say. I can tell you that when it is 80 degrees outside and I drive the car hard, after I park I will put my hand over the vent and the heat is substantial. I presume that when I am moving, even more heat is being sucked out because of negative pressure created by the shape of the molding in front of the vent opening. If anyone knows of a tape that changes color based on temp, I would get some and stick it to the vent as a test.

As to potential water damage, I don't think so. Water would have to be going at a weird upwards angel to get into the engine bay through the side vent. I would worry about a vented hood and water damage, but not the side vents.

Finally, the real reason I did it was I hated the faux vent.

Scoops bad, vents good. Anything you can do to exhaust the fenders and the engine bay will improve cooling and downforce.

Here is a pic of my conversion. You can't tell, but the fender is cut behind the mesh of the new functional vent.

how much did that cost? if its less than a vented hood then that's definitely do able as a cooling option for me.

The Prova vents are about the price of a vented hood.

If you are handy with a dremel, you can make basically the exact same vents out of the BRZ fender garnishes for no $$.

That looks SICK!

My BRZ is the same color. Did you have any trouble color matching?
