The piece that I couldn't avoid was about a quarter of the semi tire circumference in size, complete tire width, complete tire sans inner tube, standing up on its side. It was like curb checking the side of the road at 70 mph.

If it had nailed the tire, I'd have perhaps had even more damage.

I barely clipped it with my defensive maneuver. Instead of colliding head on, I was able to only clip the edge.

On phone I am. Therefore, if mistakes I make, Frank Oz blame you should.

Well done, wouldn't want to see the outcome of that!

Hardly well done. I didn't dodge aggressively enough.

Well done would have been avoiding the piece entirely. Unfortunately I didn't have time to check my side mirrors for traffic (reflexive action when I'm on the freeway with other cars), and thus didn't do a complete out-of-lane swerve/dodge.

I'm so royally pissed. At the minimum, new front bumper. I'm wondering how much that's going to cost with paint matching.

If the bill is going to be estimated at over $1k, I'm going to try a comprehensive insurance claim (my collision deductible is $500, comprehensive is $1k). Under that, I'll pay out of pocket and USAA won't hear of it. Just an off-the-books repair job.

Unless someone knows where I can get the hookup on an OEM BRZ front bumper, or a nice-looking aftermarket front bumper + paint matching that'll be about only... oh, $600-$700.

@captain_jack told me he knew where to get the front bumpers for 200-280 I think and I can help you out on the painting, the owner of Larry's Paint and Body is Cheyenne's God Father he does side projects for me from time to time (I have him working on the Tigershark Bumper currently) he can do it for you for around your price range.

On another note looks like me front sway bar is out for delivery today! Think I am going to leave work early.

That sounds perfect. On a side note, know where I could get this checked out, just to make sure everything is okay, WITHOUT having to have it taken apart by a collision repair place?

I mean, it was a significant front edge impact that had a torquing effect on the car. Didn't disrupt its movement (yet), but who knows if it knocked some stuff out of spec or whatnot.

It is... I work for an Third Party Administrator and take insurance claims for a living. It's considered Road debris / Impact with other object and gets filed under comprehensive because no "owner" of the part was able to be provided. Typically, they will just replace & paint match the plastic bumpers now-a-days because it's easier or faster than fixing the damaged part

That REALLY sucks about the front facia though did it get through the bumper into the radiator at all? (Death of my subie was a dresser that fell of a moving truck in front of me and absolutely wrecked my undercarriage)

It didn't hit anywhere near the radiator. As you can see in the pics, the edge struck the front left, so no center impact, therefore no radiator strike.

sorry. Looking at it on my phone, so I couldn't tell if that was just the corner or more toward the bumper. If you're familiar with your deductible, insurance my get the vehicle back up to gorgeous again. If you have a high deductible, it may be worth it to check with your insurance about lowering it for the future. I have State Farm and $0 comp deductible cost me a whopping $7/month.

What'll happen is an adjuster or "Program provider shop" will inspect the vehicle, appraise the damages, and then repair. + side, vehicle is "Professionally repaired" which won't hurt a resale value. - Side, You're going to increase a premium if you file the claim.

EDIT:: Anyone know if there are tricks like Honda use to have? (IE Dry ice to super cool it, then warm water to make it expand and pop out the dent) I've never tried this, so please be careful if you do. I imagine it may flake the paint.

Comprehensive doesn't raise the premiums from what I understand.

And I like my deductible setup just the way it is. This is the first time since I began driving ANYTHING (so that's... in the past 15 years) that I have had any damage done to a vehicle I was driving that was NOT from an auto collision, and the auto collision's I've had can be counted on one hand with fingers left over.
