Will the FT86 suffer the same fate? Hopefully not... the FT86 is cheaper, gets better MPG, is prettier (subjective), and doesn't have a quirky engine (the 13B-MSP required too much attention for the masses). On the other hand, there are only so many people that appreciate small, relatively lightweight, RWD coupes.

Wait, what?
That's what I said earlier! Guess the mid life refresh will be getting a 2800hp increase can't wait

I'd be willing to bet it will be only little revised cosmetics inside and out. No change in performance at all other than MAYBE a small retune to work out some kinks and get 1 more hp.

With these types of things there's always less changes than you'd think with one modification out of left field... like changing the texture of the ac/heat vents

This thread is getting too long to read thru right now.

As a first 86 adopter in Canada and someone who would step in and "sell" an 86 to someone in the showroom while getting an oil change, at a car show, parking lot, gas station, etc I feel like many of us are ambassadors of the brand.

I think certain details of this car are or will become iconic and shouldn't change much itf at all. For example (flame suit on) the tail lights which are common to all 3 variants. I can recognize the model on a foggy day from quite a distance. Let the aftermarket cover the multitude of variations.

This car is a classic in its earlier years and doesn't need a ton of changes. It has unique properties that distinguish it in the market already.

Upgrade packages like the Monogram are great. Maybe improve the USDM exhaust tips. Maybe a low volume Prodrive package for Europe and similar for America where the factory ships a black bumper version to the shop that completes the build and its a $50 K special order thru the dealer. Let the tuners keep buying the stock unit and making it their own.

New version upgrade packages yearly. Ver. 3 for 2015.

Thats what I envision. Power is for the aftermarket. Muscle car people can buy a new Mustang.

Miata people will continue to be women and old fogies.

Other things needing immediate attention (in addition to the obvious power bump):

-better HU/nav, no-rattle speakers
-revised acoustic tuning for engine/exhaust to eliminate the bolts-in-a-blender engine note
-better clutch: less abrupt take-up, lower engagement point
-standard armrest/console tray cover (just make sure elbow does not bang into it when shifting like it does with the Fiesta ST)
-standard or optional HID/LED package
-rev-matching manual please! (unlikely, I know)
-replace analog speedo with customizable LCD (oil temp, pressure, etc).
Interesting. You don't own the vehicle and therefore your knowledge is mostly what you have read online. I have had NONE of these issues except crickets (which is not malfunction). And I received my car April 2012.

Old toaster and old tC were very successful. New toaster...has fallen to the point where its a slightly slower seller than the FR-S which is terrible for a model intended for high volume. New tC is their highest volume model but only slightly higher than the FRS but far from its all time best 74-75K a year in sales. On the US sales last year it goes tC(19,094) > FRS(18,327) > xB(17,849) > xD(9005) > iQ(4046). Canada the picture is worse its FRS(1825) > tC(1485) > xB(808) > iQ(493) > xD(367), where the last three are pointless in having around.

As I wrote, one of the FT86's advantages (that might help its longevity vs the RX8's) is that it:

Rotary owners have a saying, "A redline a day keeps the carbon away". Don't do that, and you risk carbon build up and eventual loss of compression. Don't follow the RX8's cold-engine shutdown procedure, and you risk flooding.

Also, oil consumption was a non-issue for owners who weren't idiots. I added a quart at 2k miles, changed the oil at 4k, added a quart at 6k, changed at 8k, etc.

Was it silly that a modern engine required that much TLC? Perhaps, but I wouldn't call the 13B-MSP unreliable.

Anyway, semantics aside, we agree... the FA20 is a more suitable motor for the masses, and hopefully the FT86's sales won't drop as quickly as the RX8's.

They SHOULD fix things like the popping from the trunk, the weather strips along the top of the doors from pinching, the weak rubber at the front top of the driver and passenger windows, rattle attacks from the dash and all this shit before anything else! HID should also be standard across the board and maybe a little less road noise. Car will be a solid platform then.

It all depends on the profitability of these models and where the threshold (sales per year) has been set. With that being said its not looking too good for you xD and iQ...

Usually its the sales expectations a automaker/brand set are conservatively low. Unfortunately for Scion all recent models failed to meet that with only the FRS being close although could be technically argued it was the only passer. The 2nd gen tC's sales goal was to double the 2009 numbers but only managed roughly 60% of that goal. The xB's sales plummeted pretty much immediately after going from 1st gen to 2nd gen not even coming remotely close to the old 1st gen xB's worst sales years. The FRS is the closest one to its goal of 20K a year. If they count the US only then its just short, if they include Canadian sales then they barely made it but certainly achieved the goal(which might be why Scion say they're happy with the sales). When the FRS was part of the picture, Scion hoped it would propel the brand to hit 100,000 in sales. They definitely didn't reach that, even combining Canadian sales doesn't bring them near that mark.

But the frs still made their sales goals. That's the point. It's doing well.

I wonder if 114.5x5 hubs will be one of the upgrades since the WRX went there. That would be nice for wheel selection.

Maybe, but I doubt it. I'll be surprised if any generation changes come any sooner than MY 2018.
