Good tires for daily/Autocross

225/45/17 is the widest I'd go for a dual-purpose setup (daily and AutoX). Guys with separate wheels/tires, sometimes use 235/40/17 Dunlop Z2s on stock sized wheels, but I don't think that's ideal if you're going to use them for daily driving too.

you can shove a 245/40 on there...but I would...and did...go with a 225/45 for the zii for autox this season.

A 245/40 on the 7" wheel will be pretty mushy, the minimum recommended wheel width is 8".

I'm running 225/45's on an 8" wheel and wouldn't want to consider running wider tires on a narrower wheel.

For the stock wheels, I would go 215/45 or 225/45.

They are good for the price but when compared with PSS or RE-11 there is no comparison. If you don't have the money for PSS priced tires V12s are a great choice!

How do the PSS and RE-11 stack up in rain though? Would hope they are grippy enough to tackle that.

"Grippy-ness" is largely unrelated to how they perform in the rain. It is the tread design that determines that. The ZII and RE11A will have much more grip than the PSS or the v12 in dry conditions, yet in the rain the PSS would probably take the cake. I know the RE11A is pretty damn good in the wet though.

I have 225 45 ZII's and like them. A bit Noisy but good for autoX and also good in rain. I would not use them in weather under 40 deg of course.

Two aspects to tire performance in the rain: Wet grip and hydroplaning resistance.

A tire's grippiness has *everything* to do with how well it performs in the rain when there's little to no standing water (which is most of the time on most roads in most rain conditions). Most current Extreme Performance and even some DOT R-compound tires will give very good grip in warm/wet conditions as long as there is not a lot of standing water, even though they may sacrifice some wet grip due to the compound being more optimized for sustained high-temperature grip. A tire optimized for rain conditions like Hoosier H20 will have a *very* soft and grippy compound indeed!
Grippiness is extremely important in wet conditions! And some tires that are OK in the dry suck in the wet. Wet grip is the main thing I look for in a street tire. Tire Rack tests give a good indication of this.

Tread pattern determines how resistant the tire is to hydroplaning, and as suggested isn't related to the compound's "grippiness". It's just a mechanical function of how well the tread pattern is able to channel water. Once you reach hydroplaning speed, of course the "grippiness" of the tire in wet conditions doesn't matter any more!

You can have a tire with excellent "wet grip" but poor hydroplaning resistance, and you can have a tire with poor "wet grip" but excellent hydroplaning resistance.

FWIW, I've been on a highway at 120-130km/h in POURING rain many times with my ZII's and they were just as stable as the all seasons on my wife's Camry. The only time I felt them hydroplane at all was driving through a couple inches of standing water on one side, it wasn't too scary because the other side of the car still had grip.

Do you have pictures of this? They are cheaper than the 235/40(not by much) and If I dont like how they feel on the 7in rim, I wouldn't mind running them on a wider wheel for DD duty.

You're absolutely right, i definitely should have been more clear. For whatever reason when i wrote my original comment I was thinking more on the lines of hyrdoplaning resistance when I said "wet grip". Hydroplaning resistance is key for me. So long as the pavement is just damp or with only a slight covering of water, these tires will perform great.
