maybe for autocross
but on the track, slapping slicks (like an R6) on an otherwise stock car ain't the best move. our local time attack series assigns modification points based on tire use, with 3 categories (street, R-Comp (like a NT01 or R1/R888) and "ubers" (R6 +)) when we introduced this, most people jumped on the street tires, those that stayed on r-comps had some form of suspension work done, those who decided to stick with the R6s and the like all had major suspension work done or came on full blown race cars. point is, no one felt they'd be competetive in stock vehicles on slicks. certainly they're faster than streets, but marginally, and generally not worth the hassle, especially given todays street tire technology.

Well, autocross is specifically what the OP asked about.
![]() Relax, @Thrustin, you'll be fine. The first run or two might be a little entertaining, but that's about it. Just like anything else, you'll need to figure out pressures...don't be surprised if it's significantly different from a street tire setup. If you get them working properly, the grip can be addictive.

they'll overheat and melt. Might not even last you a single session if you stay out for 20 minutes or something.
if you use them at the track for a lap record attempt or something, then 2-4 sessions max depending on track temps, but even then, they might not last past a 2nd outing.

no, i have never ran A6s on the track.
but if my word sounds dubious for you, perhaps a blog from the tirerack will settle your doubts. http://blog.tirerack.com/blog/choose...for-your-needs a tire that is designed to heat up in the first seconds of a standing start arn't gonna last you a lapping session on a multi-minute track.

An A6 won't "overheat and melt" when used on a track over significant duration. They will get hot and become "greasy" over time. It is true they will degrade much faster, I dont think "melt" is the appropriate verb... they will degrade and start chording much faster when driven hard at a higher sustained temperatures. With all that said, A6's are very commonly used in club racing as a qualifying tire. On the solstice we used to buy take-offs from road racing corvettes all the time and they'd easily last 30-40 autocross runs for us before they were garbage... great as a cheap way to supplement the local events and save the big ticket sticker tires for use at national events and the championship.

I really hope it's not assumptions like these that led to the mass appeal of banning R-comps in stock class.
![]() This is why we can't have nice things.

you say degrade and cord, i say melt, i appologize for not using the industry technical terms. Quote:
i see no disagreement with anything that i've said. Unless "a hot and greasy" tire is a good thing? The question was "using the tire for a test and tune", which in my neck of the woods is another word for lapping days using an A6 for lapping is stupid, you'd be better off smoking actual crack. unless of course the OP meant drag racing? meh.

a (long overdue) move to street tires has no relationship to their use as a lapping tire. the move to street tires allows a far greater amount of casual competitors to come out to have fun and actually be competetive. Being forced to bring a second set of wheels and tires for what is supposed to be a grassroots activity is not efficient. those that want to be the best will still bring special, unused sets for their top times, but there are gonna be much less of those people. A6's don't make YOU fast, they make the car fast. if you want breakneck cornering speeds, just hit up the track, a nice, cambered bend at 180kph or so should russtle your jimmies nicely.
